Great movie, highly recommend it.
👍

Helen Mirren stars in it,
and she’s actually up for a few Oscars for this one.
👍
It covers the events back in 1997 after Princess Diana died in that accident—specifically how the Queen handled the whole thing and just how bafflingly poorly they reacted. They had no clue how to act.

One thing though: I noticed at the AMC theater that some of the scenes between characters seem to get a bit blurry for a second.
😕
Is that on them? A bad edit?

How incredible was Helen Mirren's portrayal of that cold-blooded Queen... 🙏she absolutely deserves an Oscar😁

A truly great film.

Well, aren't those just the clips Frears pulled from TV broadcasts and such?

I’ve already mentioned how brilliant Helen Mirren is—though I suppose I'll say it again—and Michael Sheen is 🙏

edit: she actually teared up when she won her Oscar for Best Actress 😍
so sweet.

The movie is absolutely fantastic, and Helen Mirren is just incredible! She truly deserves an Oscar for this performance. I was actually a little worried that the scenes involving Princess Diana might lean too hard into being overly sentimental or feel like a cheap tribute to Lady Diana, but the director handled the whole situation regarding her passing and the funeral so beautifully.

I am just left wondering why they chose to portray the handsome Prince Charles III as such a decent guy. And one more thing... I had no idea the British Prime Minister held that much sway over the Queen...

That specific scene with the deer... hmm... was the Queen feeling a sense of guilt over Princess Diana, or were they trying to suggest she cares more about a wounded animal than she did about the late Princess Diana??

Why is everyone raving about this movie? I just don't get it...

I mean, Helen Mirren is fantastic, and the rest of the cast is solid too—no arguments there—but does anyone actually care about these events? What was the point? The story feels way too niche (by which I mean it seems like something only an Englishman would find gripping) and it has that vibe of a Sunday afternoon TV movie...

I can see why it got nominated, though. Still, I’d have picked United 93 over this any day. But hey, to each their own... 🙂

It strikes me that the deer is a blatant symbol for Princess Diana herself, while the hunters act as the paparazzi... and poor thing ends up decapitated, much like Princess Diana was.

I watched the film yesterday. It was exceptionally well done... 👍
If Helen Mirren doesn't take home an Oscar, it will be definitive proof that the Academy has completely lost its way. 😁
My only grievance is the portrayal of Blair; he’s depicted far too positively, almost too idealistic. I mean, he’s just a typical labor politician who ends up sucking up to George W. Bush just a few years later... 🙄 yeah, right.

I guess the deer symbol isn't necessarily about Princess Diana literally, but maybe more about the principles she stood for—those qualities that seem to have vanished within the royal family, lost under all those cold, lifeless formalities... that raw, elemental, almost animalistic nature.

@Larry Cruz51 - I don't think the movie was trying to paint the Queen as some cold-hearted bitch.
Sure, maybe she wasn't particularly fond of Princess Diana, but that’s her right, I suppose.
The whole film seems to be about listening to the times, about the Queen’s failure to sense the shifting tides within her own nation.

Depending on who you ask about that shift, some might say it was just the public wanting to see royals portrayed as vulnerable human beings; others, maybe they'd argue it was just the tyranny of the tabloid press and shallow crowds being whipped into a frenzy over things they don't even truly understand.

To my mind—why on earth should the flag be flown at half-mast for someone who left the royal family, especially if it wasn't done for the Queen's own father??? Just because a few semi-literate journalists think so???

@rustyscout31 - why shouldn't the 'handsome' prince be shown as a 'good guy'???
You know exactly what Princess Diana was like privately, and why King Charles III moved on from someone who looked like Princess Diana to someone who looks like Camilla.

Anyway, Tony Blair is depicted quite positively because he respects the Queen, whereas his wife is portrayed as this foolish, aggressive shrew just because she’s Catholic—and, well, by extension, a hater of the monarchy, since apparently all Catholics in the world have spent the last 450 years trying to topple the British Crown.

honestly, if you don't get what the movie is about, you just missed the point. It's not just for Americans. Look, I'm not even from here and I found it pretty gripping.

Hold on a second... It's not that I don't understand the plot, that's not the issue... It's more about why anyone outside of England would care. Honestly, who cares about the British Royal Family besides the British themselves? Who really cares about Princess Diana, King Charles III, their kids, and the rest of the clan? Why even make a movie about them? About their lives? What makes those few days so incredibly special?
Princess Diana divorced King Charles III, so naturally, they didn't consider her part of the family anymore, regardless of the children... She had her issues with those guys from the Middle East—so of course she wasn't considered part of the inner circle anymore... And obviously, they weren't fond of her... I just don't see what the goal was by putting something like that on screen.
Fair enough... There are other angles, like showing how the death of one person can impact an entire nation... To me, that seems a bit much, since nobody actually knew her personally, aside from what the media fed us... The film also touches on how much power the media holds over everything these days... But if that was the actual point of the movie, then man, it missed the mark. 🙂

I don't really care about the whole Princess Diana thing as some documentary piece either. Even if it's mostly fiction, there’s something gripping about it. Her character is what sticks—this woman totally disconnected from the real world, unable to wrap her head around why people obsess over someone they’ve never even met, or how they can be so loud with their feelings when she wouldn't even show emotion in front of her own grandkids. It's all about how her upbringing shaped her into that person. I think you completely missed the point of the movie. It didn't have to be about Princess Diana specifically, but they used her and Elizabeth as examples to make the impact hit harder.
Personally, I couldn't care less about the British Royal Family. I never followed who Princess Diana was dating, who that guy was, or any of the drama involving the rest of the family. I'm watching this strictly as cinema, and as art, it’s actually high quality.

What I actually loved about the movie was how they portrayed The Queen as this "eternal wonder in a modern world." It’s like she was genuinely baffled by the raw, massive emotional outbursts of the common people—as if she’d just woken up from a centuries-long nap into a world she doesn't even recognize anymore.
I’d call the film Awakening.😎
Besides, the movie doesn't really dive deep into the inner workings of the Royal Family, Princess Diana, or what life in America was like back then; it’s all about the vibe and the impression left behind, so it isn't some niche thing meant just for Americans.

I can't quite grasp it either... Does that mean I'm interesting enough to have a movie made about me?

This movie is basically just slickly packaged propaganda for a fading monarchy and one of the worst US presidents in history. They try to win you over with those touching little scenes—you know, where he’s making calls from some modest apartment while kids are running around and his wife is just there with the leftovers from lunch.
Technically speaking, the film looks polished, which—given how much money gets thrown at digital effects and massive budgets these days—is actually somewhat impressive
