With so many huge titles getting the big screen treatment lately, it’s finally happening—a movie adaptation of the massive fantasy hit The Witcher is slated for a 2017 release.

The American production outfit Sean Daniel's Alphaville Films, the same folks behind The Mummy, is teaming up with Platique image to bring Andrzej Sapkowski's books to life.

According to Platique Images, the film will be directed by Tomasz Baginski, who actually snagged an Oscar nod for his animated short, The Cathedral.

From what I've gathered, CD Projekt Red—the studio behind the actual games like The Witcher, The Witcher 2, and the massive The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt that dropped this year—isn't actually involved in this specific movie project.

Thania st. John, who has worked on shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, is lined up to write the script, though we haven't heard anything about who's playing the characters yet. They're aiming for a 2017 release and it sounds like they want this to be the start of a whole series.
Now, while CD Projekt Red handled the video game versions, this movie is a different beast. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt recently got a cool expansion called Hearts of Stone, in which Geralt is hired to defeat a bandit captain called Olgierd von Everec. That added about 10 more hours of fun to an already huge game. Honestly, IT should be interesting to see How The film adaptions handled The expansive fiction of The Witcher Universe.

Hey there. Finding the right actor to play Geralt is going to be absolutely critical here. We need someone who carries an immense amount of charisma.

Are we looking at an adaptation straight from the books or is it going to pull from the games?

It’s based on the book, though they did mention it wouldn't be a direct adaptation.

It’s tough to picture an actor who could actually pull off Geralt. Both the books and the games have enough meat for a massive trilogy, maybe more. It would be a real shame if they turned it into some cheap Hollywood cash-grab like Hobbit or Seventh Son. The Witcher is far too dark and gritty for that; there isn't much room for jokes when the source material leans so heavily into pure horror.

This trailer feels like it was lifted straight from one of the books, and it nails the vibe perfectly.



A movie like this could be great, but it’d be so easy to ruin everything with the wrong lead actor or by stripping away the atmosphere found in the books and games.

Honestly, I can't think of a single actor who actually looks like they stepped right out of the games.

That’s exactly where things fall apart these days when they try to turn video games into movies. They almost never actually stick to what made the game great in the first place.
If they really want to pull in the hardcore fans for the movie version, they’re going to have to nail the casting. It’s everything.

So they’re starting with the prequel vibes from Last Wish. Honestly, my brain is a sieve right now and I can't quite recall which specific story is the Lesser Evil one from that collection.
It looks like they're sticking to those shorter, standalone tales for now. If they ever actually try to tackle the main saga, they're going to have to roll up their sleeves and really get to work.

The Witcher feels more like something out of Grimm than the typical modern grimdark fantasy stuff you see nowadays. As dark as it gets, it’s still fundamentally a fairy tale world—it carries this nostalgic vibe from an era when kids actually stayed up late being terrified of monsters under the bed.

Lesser Evil has totally faded from my memory, so I'm definitely going to have to give it another read. I can picture how it starts, but the ending has completely slipped my mind

Christopher Lambert seems like a rather logical choice...

That’s basically the part where he gets hired by some mage who's trying to dodge a death sentence from a woman seeking vengeance—apparently because he was running experiments on her or something. It all culminates in this intense showdown where, to the local villagers, Geralt just looks like your run-of-the-mill butcher since he ends up taking down a whole group of innocent people right in front of them.

Too much. I'd personally go with Viggo Mortensen.
EDIT: Actually, Viggo is only one year younger, but I think he looks even younger physically.

Since Lambert and Mortensen both have plenty of experience swinging swords on screen—think Highlander and Lord of the Rings—you can actually see them pulling off roles in this movie.

I just can't wrap my head around Dolph Lundgren being cast in this role. It just doesn't fit.

Personally, I think Mads Mikkelsen would be absolutely phenomenal as Geralt. He’s got the age right for it... he's still in incredible shape... yeah, honestly, he's just perfect for the role.
