I honestly wish the admins—or whoever’s actually running this show—would give us some guidance on when a thread should be shut down.

It’s kind of a bummer that got nuked, because I poured a ton of time into it and now that whole conversation is just going to sink, even though it turned into this really interesting debate that could’ve actually taught the younger crowd joining the site something useful.

Look, if a mod wants to close a thread, fine, they can do whatever they want, but isn't the whole point of being a moderator to actually manage the discussion so things don't get out of hand enough to require a shutdown in the first place? It feels weird when you let people go on for several pages and then suddenly just kill it—like, if you were already thinking about closing it, why not just do it immediately? I could’ve used that extra time to grab a coffee or something.

It’s good that you feel a little guilty... if it were a lot, maybe I'd actually be worried 😁

Regrettably, looking at this objectively, it was my mistake. I failed to issue a warning for trolling to the OP and didn't immediately shut down a thread that was clearly framed in such a condescending manner...

driftingeagle27 said:I wrote all this out and spent quite a bit of time on it, and now it's all going to sink,

...so, I suppose you could consider yourself collateral damage.

Knowing the usual crowd on these forums—who, let's face it, are never satisfied—once a topic starts veering into those weirdly specific geographic-psychoanalytical waters, I wouldn't be surprised if people started complaining about why their specific posts were deleted (especially the person who started it all).

Consequently, my own personal "judicial conviction" is that this thread isn't quite important enough for it to matter whether it sinks right this second or in a few days... therefore, I shall invoke points 5 and 6 of the site FAQ, and if higher authorities decide a reaction is required in such a productive fashion, then so be it.

I believe the title of the thread has received a clear enough answer; everything else is just throwing mud with gloves on.

Then why didn't you? 🤷

First off, let me tackle the big one:

what else wouldn't you be? 🤷

By the time I actually felt like doing something about it, it was pretty much too late anyway, but don't sweat it, I'll get around to it today.

fadedowl said:glad you feel a little bad... if you felt a lot, maybe you’d actually care 😁

Just a little, but honestly, just as a heads-up for next time—if I can get even a hint of whether the next thread that takes an interesting turn is going to get shut down, I'd appreciate it, because from what you wrote here, I can't tell if it will.

fadedowl said:unfortunately, objectively speaking, it's my fault for not handing out a ban card to the OP immediately and just locking this thread since it was posted in such a condescending way...

I guess you could say that, but since you didn't, and you saw we had enough people there to handle him, maybe you should have just let the thread play out naturally, guided by basic decency rather than whether the topics popping up—like sociology, geography, or politics—actually interest you personally.

Maybe I messed up, maybe I didn't... we aren't going to find out anytime soon

But just for the record... all that talk about the old country and its systems you guys were posting in the Azra thread? It didn't interest me one bit (certainly less than this), and honestly, those posts were cluttered with way too much off-topic nonsense
Now, look—even though we as moderators don't exactly tolerate politics in the Music section, I don't have a problem with it as long as the discussion stays civilized and keeps a decent tone. These days on the forum, it only takes one snarky little comment to send everything spiraling into total chaos
So, I’m hoping I might still get some kind of benefit of doubt?

If some troll had suddenly jumped into that thread—which actually did happen, and I already handed out a sanction—I definitely wouldn't have shut it down. But in this specific case, playing along with a troll who just repeats the same mindless garbage over and over? As a moderator, I just didn't feel like putting up with it anymore

Sure. Look, it’s not like this is some massive crisis or anything, but maybe the Professor could’ve been just a bit more chill and reasonable if you’d let us riff on Halid and that whole "Mediterranean cultural circle" thing for a minute 😛; sometimes having a conversation is better than just getting handed a red card.

Regarding off-topic stuff in general, pretty much anything can turn into a discussion point on a thread, even if it wasn't mentioned in the original post. Obviously, it’s off-topic if someone just wanders in out of nowhere talking about something totally random, but on an Azra thread, we naturally drifted into politics, which isn't exactly a stretch given how everything ties back to the core subject (Azra, Stulic). I don't think there needs to be much heavy-handed policing here (not that you were being strict anyway).

Bottom line is, it's whatever.

I'm waiting on one of the admins to actually step up and look at this thread, especially with this whole explanation they gave about shutting things down.

I’m guessing you’ve been counting down the days since September 21st just waiting for a chance to pull this one.

Honestly, this topic makes absolutely zero sense in the Music subforum, though I sometimes wonder if anything makes sense anywhere at all. 🤔 Maybe over here would be a better fit, since this is the proper place for these kinds of random, unhinged streams of consciousness.

Look, our mistake was probably not nuking this ridiculous thread the second it popped up, but hey, it’s not like we have to be strictly by-the-book professionals every single second of the day. 😁 My bad to all the other users who’ve spent days filing reports and wondering why on earth a thread like this is even allowed in the Music section. 🙂

I’m honestly pretty bummed that this thread got locked because I really wanted to get back to sinkhole... now I can't, which—of course—is such a shame. 😁

I actually had no idea people were filing reports against this; I’m genuinely curious, though—what was the reasoning behind asking for the thread to be pulled? 😕

The Music subforum is just... different. You can say certain musicians or bands are morons, total hacks, or complete disasters, whereas you couldn't really do that elsewhere—I mean, you wouldn't go into a Science subforum and just call some scientist an idiot for no reason. That’s just the fundamental difference between these specific boards.

The topic itself leans a little bit toward trolling, sure, since that's how people talk about certain artists—but if I recall correctly, that’s allowed here. In fact, whenever someone used to complain in the past (myself included, I guess) that we should provide actual arguments for those kinds of comments, the usual response was basically telling them to lighten up, because this is the Music board and you’re free to write whatever you want. 🤷

My whole point was that on the Music board, we aren't expected to provide deep, reasoned arguments for everything, because the prevailing logic here is truly just "to each their own" regarding taste. And once you accept that premise, you inevitably run into the kind of trolling we saw happening right here in this topic.

Take the Literature subforum, for example. Even there, people call dead or living authors idiots, or label certain books as absolute garbage, and it's tolerated. It seems to be the consensus that when it comes to art, there aren't any hard boundaries for discussion; everyone has the right to say something is legendary or total trash without needing to offer a formal dissertation on why.

I’m not entirely sure if the rules have shifted recently or if I'm just out of the loop on some new policy...

Regardless, the way this thread was set up—using this specific style and tone—is very similar to how things are written in magazines like Sony Music, Spin Media, or even in outlets like Nomad Capitalist and Dopamine. This thread just uses a pop culture reference as a framework to discuss music, which is exactly how it was framed from the start.

So, at the end of the day, it’s clearly about music, which makes me think it was a mistake to shut the thread down for that reason. 😉

this whole thing is basically a textbook example of what needs to be shut down, especially within the music subforum
look, folks, if you just want to blow off steam and argue about absolutely nothing, we have plenty of other subforums and off-topic sections specifically designed for that kind of nonsense
i honestly find it hard to wrap my head around the fact that anyone would actually complain about closing
