I just opened this in my car and realized the discussion is much better over here... copying it now...

Hi everyone, I’m looking for some guidance and advice.
I am selling a car to my brother-in-law. He asked if we could just sign a power of attorney instead of a formal bill of sale because he’s worried about being hit with taxes. It’s just an old 10-year-old Chevy Spark. My brother-in-law claims that once I hand over that power of attorney, I effectively lose all ties to the vehicle—that he can sell it to whoever he wants without ever needing my signature again.
What is the actual legal distinction here? As the registered owner, do I carry any liability if there is an accident or if the car is involved in something illegal while someone else is driving under that power of attorney? I want to avoid any possible scenario where I end up being held responsible years down the line because we skipped the official paperwork. I have a small baby at home and another one on the way, so I cannot afford any unnecessary legal headaches. If anyone with experience could weigh in, I would truly appreciate it!
