The procedure itself is an outpatient thing. I believe the cost falls somewhere between $1,000 and $1000 (though I can't say for certain since I wasn't raised in the States). You have the option of undergoing it under local anesthesia—which, frankly, is excruciatingly painful—or opting for general anesthesia, though you’ll be left feeling quite groggy for a few hours afterward. The actual process only takes about ten minutes, but as I mentioned, the pain is intense. Essentially, they use a vacuum to empty the uterine contents. Once it's finished, they’ll prescribe antibiotics along with some medication to manage the cramping, and you'll need to take it easy and rest to prevent any infection from setting in. You should expect your period to return in about a month, and you really ought to avoid sexual intercourse for a while to ensure there isn't an infection.
