So, here’s the deal... I caught a segment on the news about this new way to treat metastatic breast cancer. I did a little digging online and stumbled upon a website with some really interesting info, but I wanted to see if anyone here knows anything about whether this will be available here in the States. Does anyone know how soon it might roll out, what the requirements are, or what the costs look like?

I mean, if we can even expect it to be an option for us anytime soon...

Tykerb just got the green light from the FDA for treating metastatic breast cancer when paired up with Xelod chemo.

I’m guessing we’ll see approval from other major regulators pretty soon too, so maybe we can expect it to hit the US market by the end of the year? One big plus compared to other options is that it's designed to be a once-a-day pill—way easier than sitting through an infusion. The catch, though, is the same deal as Herceptin... it only really works for cancers where there's that HER2 protein overexpression.

As for the price tag: it shouldn't be crazy high. 🙂 Since Tykerb is a small molecule, unlike Herceptin which is a monoclonal antibody, it should be much more manageable. Of course, that doesn't mean it won't cost a fortune—not while the patent is still active, anyway—but it should be way more accessible for most people...

Now, CNN is reporting that the price per dose in the USA is around $16 $0.00.
Tonight, they're going to be discussing this on the "topic of the day" segment on CNN.

Ugh, man... if only people would actually believe what they see on those new TV commercials 😉

From what I can gather online, nobody’s even talking about how much this stuff is gonna cost yet. It probably hasn't even been fully figured out for the US market or anywhere else...

It shows up on a few other sites too, all citing the same price point—about $2,900 for a monthly dose, which comes out to roughly $5333
