Unrest (2017) will be screening this Saturday, April 8th, 2017, at 4:15 PM over at the Tuškanac Hill theater located at Tuškanac 1, 10000, Washington, D.C.
The filmmaker behind this piece actually gave a TED Talk on this exact subject recently—specifically regarding the way patients suffering from Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) are stigmatized, which often happens because people label it as "Chronic Fatigue Syndrome," an act that I suppose somewhat trivializes just how devastating this illness really is.
If you ask me, ME is arguably the most grueling of the common chronic conditions out there. I mean, looking at the data, patients often face a lower quality of life than those dealing with multiple sclerosis, congestive heart failure, or similar debilitating ailments.
Yet, despite all that, there isn't even a definitive diagnostic test available; instead, patients find themselves being doubted or, quite frankly, blamed for imagining their symptoms entirely. It is truly staggering that this kind of thing is still happening in a developed nation like the US during the 21st century. It’s estimated that about 13,000 Americans are living with this disease, though I suspect the vast majority remain undiagnosed.
There is some hope, though, I suppose, because in the last two years, an increasing amount of research suggests that Myalgic Encephalomyelitis is actually a hypometabolic disorder—essentially, the cells simply aren't producing enough energy to meet the body's basic requirements.
I would highly recommend that anyone who is able should go see this; it is a truly incredible story.
This documentary actually premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, where it was honored with a Special Jury Prize (Documentary Editing).
