Hey everyone.

HELP. I need some assistance. I've got a USB drive that's basically gone rogue. I'm running Windows 8 and it won't even recognize the thing—it's acting like nothing was plugged into the port at all. It's a Transcend 32GB JetFlash 360 USB Flash Drive.

Someone on this forum already suggested a fix for a similar issue, but honestly? It didn't work for me.

I've been scouring Google for a few days now, but honestly? None of the software they keep pushing actually worked. I've already tried Power Data Recovery, EaseUS Data Recovery, MiniTool, TaskDisk, and Recuva... nothing. Total waste of time.
Also:
Tried an Uninstall followed by a fresh reinstall of the USB drivers, but nope—problem's still there.
Even through Device Manager, I'm hitting a wall. It just shows up as an "Unknown USB device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)." Any ideas?
Tried that "update driver software" option in Device Manager. Total waste of time. Even hitting Uninstall didn't do squat either.
Even a reboot didn't fix it. What else is there?
The USB isn't working on the other PC (Windows XP).

I’m honestly at a loss here. I haven't given up hope yet, though. Figured you guys would probably know what to do. 👏

Anyone got an idea on how to rescue these files? They’re pretty huge for me. I'm trying to avoid having to break out the tweezers and a soldering iron since I don't have that gear on hand... If I actually go through the trouble of getting them, though, can someone drop a YouTube link showing exactly what needs to be soldered? 😢
HELP!🕺

Stop messing around with that USB drive and playing doctor; you're just going to permanently wipe whatever data might actually be left... Tweezers and a soldering iron? Seriously? You might as well stick it in an oven. If those files actually matter to you, just call professional data recovery services and get a quote. Recovering stuff from a USB usually starts at around $42, which honestly isn't a huge deal if that data is actually important to you...

darkowl72 makes some good points, honestly there isn't much you can do about this at home. I guess there’s no magic DIY recipe for when things just stop working and you're wondering what needs soldering. You probably need a pro to actually look at it and figure out where the fault lies. Besides, you can't really do much to a USB with a basic soldering iron; you'd likely need way more heavy-duty gear for that...

Thanks for the replies, the link, and all the feedback.

Anyone know of any software that might actually work here?
I’m gonna try everything I can. If I can't fix it on my PC at home, I'll just head over to a pro repair shop.

None of those programs are truly non-destructive. Even if they aren't actively overwriting files, just repeatedly scanning the drive—even if it's "read-only"—can further compromise the integrity of the data or the media itself. I don't know about all the technical specifics, but by constantly cycling through different tools to try and fix things, you might just be making a bad situation even worse.

New software probably won't fix much if the PC can't even talk to the Microsoft drive (Device Descriptor Request Failed). If it's acting up on another machine too, I guess that's just a sign the drive is totally dead.
