I want the real deal—the good, the bad, how long ago you did it, which doctors you’d recommend, and anything else that might be useful. No Google searches here; I'm strictly looking for firsthand accounts. Thanks!
I've been thinking about getting a vasectomy for a while now and finally decided to pull the trigger, though I haven't picked a clinic yet... I'm over 36, have two kids... maybe I'll share my experience as I try to find the right place.🙂
It seems like everywhere I ask, a vasectomy is treated like a taboo subject here, which is pretty frustrating. Even though I've read on forums and in articles that any urology clinic in the US should perform them, my experience suggests it isn't that simple to find one.
First, I went to my GP for advice and maybe a recommendation for a clinic or a specific method. Unfortunately, he couldn't recommend anything because, as he put it, he doesn't have much concrete knowledge on it and hasn't had patients go through it before. He did refer me to a urologist at the Mayo Clinic, though. That urologist seemed somewhat uninterested; he mentioned they could do it, but it would require spinal anesthesia and a 24-hour hospital stay. He couldn't give me an exact price, but it would start at $667 since the procedure isn't covered by standard insurance (I assume it would end up costing me twice that in the end). I didn't really feel like I could trust his approach, and I noticed they perform the procedure extremely rarely, even though he claimed it’s routine and one of the simplest things in urology. They use the classic conservative method—scalpel incision and then stitches. They require a whole battery of tests beforehand, too. Then there's the waitlist for a hospital bed. (I haven't totally ruled this out, but the long wait, the 24-hour stay, all those tests, and the fact that I'd much prefer local anesthesia make it less practical.)
Next, I contacted a private clinic in Seattle that also uses the traditional method, but with general anesthesia. The price was around $3167!!! and the stay would be about 6 hours. (That option is out for me due to the cost and the general anesthesia.)
I also reached out to a private practice in Washington, D.C. that does the classic method using local anesthesia. Just one or two stitches. Price is $1000. Total time at the office: about an hour. (This one is definitely on my shortlist.)
In the US, I haven't found a clinic that performs the No-Scalpel method. That technique seems more common abroad. The recovery is supposedly easier and there are no stitches, just skin glue. I'm guessing the scarring is minimal without the stitches. From what I can see, a no-scalpel procedure in clinics in Austria costs between $300-$750 and takes about 45 minutes. So, I'm leaning toward that option, even though I'd much rather do it here in the States. The downsides are the language barrier and the fact that I'd have to drive 2-3 hours back from Austria afterward, and I wouldn't be able to easily make it to a follow-up, which apparently isn't always necessary anyway.
If anyone knows of a place in the US that does the no-scalpel method, please let me know—feel free to send a private message.
