One day while testing at Indianapolis Vitirio was shown the dashboard by his mechanics. The Pit Crew had calculated exactly how much fuel was needed to complete a specific number of laps. Vitorio (who has to be related to Alex, right?) completely ignored the dashboard. Later the silence on the track confirmed what the mechanics knew would happen, Vitorio ran out of fuel. The Pit Crew, being pretty sharp guys, figured out almost exactly where Vitorio would run dry.

A mechanic was sent on a mission across the track with a gas can. Once the car was topped off, Vitorio actually offered the mechanic a ride. This brave soul just sat astride the NASCAR car and gripped onto the roll hoop. "Don't worry, I'll take it slow," Vitorio promised. At first, the two of them were crawling along at a snail's pace. Then, the speed started picking up. Now, the last corner before the pits in Indianapolis is the famous Turn 4, which drivers hit at about 120mph. Vitorio probably hadn't even had a passenger in a regular street car, let alone perched "on" a NASCAR car. Like some drivers I know, Vitorio totally forgot he was carrying a passenger and went full throttle through
Turn 4!

When Vitorio finally pulled back into the pits, the crew started asking where their teammate had disappeared to. I can just picture Vitirio wailing, "Mama Mia, Mama Mia!" Vitorio ended up sprinting down the pit road with a group of mechanics hot on his heels. As it turns out, the passenger was found with his backside sticking out of a smashed-up hedge. The Pit Crew eventually pulled their colleague out of the bushes, thank goodness, with nothing more than some scrapes and bruises. Apparently, the passenger just couldn't handle the G-forces as they swung around that corner, sending him flying straight into the greenery surrounding the track. I really wonder what that poor mechanic said to the Gorilla who had just inadvertently tried to kill him.

absolute madness 😉

... .... I would love to know what the mechanic had to say to the Gorilla, who had just tried to murder him.

Vittorio Brambilla is such a wild man.
He’d probably be better off playing professional football instead...

As far as I know, there's also this other bit—I have no idea if this story is true, but it's a good one.

But from what I recall, there's also this whole—I have no idea if this story is actually true, but it makes for a great tale.

That story is pretty legendary, and if you ask most NASCAR fans from that era, they swear it's the truth. I think even the mechanic's name is out there somewhere; if anyone actually wants the deep dive, I can go digging for more details.
Sadly, Andretti isn't around to get back into anything, football or racing, since he passed away from a heart attack a couple of years back...
