Hey everyone. I’m dealing with a really weird Wi-Fi issue, and it’s happening exclusively on my main laptop—the one I actually need to get work done on. 👎

So, here’s the setup. I have an Xfinity modem with built-in Wi-Fi, but the range is pretty pathetic, so I originally hooked up a TP-Link router to extend the signal into my room. That worked fine. Then that router died, and someone gave me a Netgear router to use instead. I plugged the Netgear into the Xfinity modem, and everything seems fine for everyone else. My two other laptops in the house connect just fine, the tablet works, all the phones are good—except for my laptop (of course). It’s a very specific headache.

Basically, when I connect to the Netgear, the laptop establishes the connection but there's zero internet access:

But about once every five tries, I’ll actually get internet access, though it feels like playing the lottery:

I’ve highlighted both scenarios in red, but the most important part is what I marked in blue at the top. When that "2" isn't there, there's no internet. But when the "2" shows up, everything works. Most of the time, it connects without the "2," and then I'm stuck with no connection. It’s almost like the computer remembers two different networks with the same name—one with a "2" at the end and one without—and they're clashing. If it hits the one with the "2," I'm golden. Without it, nothing. And it's always the same device I'm trying to use.

I even tried removing the network profile entirely:

...but the same thing happens. The Netgear name pops up again, sometimes with the "2" and sometimes without. It’s back to the same cycle where either I have no internet, or I have to be incredibly lucky to catch the one with the "2." How do I fix this mess? Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

Ever tried right-clicking that icon when the internet's down? You can let Windows try to troubleshoot any hardware conflicts itself.

Yeah, I am. It keeps throwing a DNS error at me. But here's the weird part—it only acts up when I've got it hooked up to the Netgear, whereas everything runs perfectly fine when I switch over to the Netgear 2. Is there some kind of registry entry on my PC where I can just wipe all that out and start fresh?

Look, if you don't overcomplicate things or get too deep into the weeds, you can just uninstall the Wi-Fi card on your laptop. Just make sure you actually have the driver saved somewhere before you do that, so you can reinstall it and hopefully everything just resets itself... Set everything to automatic detection—don't go manually typing in IP addresses, DNS servers, or any of that junk...

If it happens again, though, you're going to have to troubleshoot it step by step...

wiredtiger2 mentioned that you set a static IP on that laptop of yours, and that’s where things are getting messy. Are your settings actually set to pull an IP automatically, or did you hardcode a fixed one? Honestly, just switch it back to automatic—at least for now...

I’m running into a pretty similar headache myself.
So, here’s the setup: I’ve got an Xfinity Linksys unit set up in bridge mode, and I have it hooked directly into a Netgear via a LAN cable.
The real kicker is that I can only get online if I’m using my laptop. My phones will connect to the signal just fine, but there’s absolutely no actual internet access! It doesn't matter which router I try to jump on—both of them work perfectly for the laptop, yet the mobile devices just sit there spinning.
Does anyone have any advice or a lead on what might be causing this?

Rachel Brooks63 said:She mentioned you might have assigned a static IP to that laptop, and that could be the culprit. Are your settings set to DHCP/automatic, or did you hardcode an IP? Try switching it back to automatic, at least just to test things out.

It’s already on automatic. Still stuck. It seems like whenever there's a "2" appended to the SSID, it works, but without the "2," the internet just drops out. Is there some way to fix this through the registry?

PS Finally got this thing sorted out. Turns out there were two identical SSIDs clashing in the registry. To clear the whole mess out, you have to follow these steps from this guide:
