Where did the search bar go?

So, where did the search bar go? And more importantly, why?

Until the forum search finally starts working again, just use Google to find stuff here.

Basically, you can tell Google to only look at one specific domain. Since Reddit is indexed pretty well, the results shouldn't be much different from using our own search tool anyway.

To search only this site via Google, just do this:

Type whatever you're looking for into Google, then add site:http://www.reddit.com

So, if we're trying to find hollowtrucker77 (not an insult or anything, I guess 😁):

hollowtrucker77 site:http://www.reddit.com and you'll get these results:

Searching...

There. No need to keep hitting the refresh button on the search bar. 😁

This whole thing with searching for good stuff... it's always like this. Works for pretty much any site, I guess.

Personally, I’d be absolutely thrilled if they just cluttered up Google search results with a hardcoded, predefined search specifically for Reddit

You can even just type "site:reddit.com".

Look, there's already a way to do this and it works fine for me. It's fast, efficient, and doesn't wreck the server...
But I guess there are some downsides. I'm not sure if you can kill the built-in search on vBulletin without breaking everything else—like searching for specific users, looking through threads, finding new posts, and all that other stuff.
From what I can tell, one single module probably handles all those functions, so turning it off would basically gut the site's tools...

Maybe it’d be worth suggesting to the sysadmin or the owner to just add a dedicated Google-Forum search tool somewhere visible? Some people would definitely use it. Fewer searches hitting the internal forum means less load on the server and the database, making the site faster, plus people get an extra option. I don't see how that could hurt.

Like, over here it's placed really well, and even though the standard tools exist, I almost always use the Google one instead.

It seems rather foolish of me, considering I was just using that to navigate back to my own previous threads. There is absolutely no way anyone is going to go searching for them manually now 🙂

You'll just be out there hunting them down semi-automatically again tomorrow. 😉
