Why is the edit button missing?

Why am I unable to edit my old posts?
The thread is a month old... though I really should just delete it. Why isn't it working?

After a few days, that edit button just vanishes into thin air, leaving you stuck with whatever you wrote
and honestly, you can't even go back and wipe your own thread from the map either

It’s just how the site is coded, honestly. Once five hours have passed since you hit send, what’s done is done. You basically get a five-hour window to change your mind or fix a typo, but after that, the system locks it down.
