So, I just finished installing Windows on my girlfriend's laptop yesterday.

Everything worked perfectly fine when she connected to my router—she was online without a hitch. But now, she’s trying to get back home and can't connect to her own router at all. It keeps saying she has a limited connection.

I ran an ipconfig/all and it’s showing a 169.254.x.x IP address with no default gateway listed. I guess I'm wondering if I should try setting a static IP, or maybe it's a firewall issue? Or who knows, maybe it's just some buggy wireless adapter drivers... I'm really not sure.

Thanks in advance!

You might want to try assigning a static IP, as it's possible the DHCP server on the router has been disabled
. That specific IP address is just a default fallback from Windows, which essentially means the router hasn't actually assigned any IP to the device yet

DHCP should probably be enabled—her brother connects via LAN, and everything worked perfectly fine before I did that Windows reinstall. I’m heading over to her place tomorrow to check it out, so I'll let you know what happens.

It’s entirely possible that the setting is toggled on but just isn't behaving as expected—it’s one of those tech mysteries where everything looks correct on paper but fails in practice. Give it a shot when you have a moment and let me know how it pans out.

@silent

Go to CMD and try this sequence:
type ipconfig /release

then follow it up with ipconfig /renew

If you’re still stuck after that, just reset the router. Unplug it from the wall for about 15 seconds and see if there's any actual progress.
