Hey there!

So, here’s the deal—I'm running into a bit of a headache:
I just picked up a new laptop, an HP EliteBook 8570p, running Windows 7.
I’m also using Xfinity Wi-Fi through a Thomson TWG850-4 modem.
The modem is set up with the standard WPA2 security settings.

Now, here is where it gets weird.
If I plug my laptop directly into the modem with an Ethernet cable, everything works perfectly fine.
If I try connecting with my old laptop (which is still stuck on Windows XP) or even my phone (running Android), they both pick up the signal and work without any drama at all.
Even if I take this new laptop over to my sister's place—she uses a Spectrum modem with a password-protected network—it connects just fine.
But, for some reason, when I try to connect this new laptop to my own Wi-Fi at home... nothing. Total silence.
It just gives me that annoying little error message: 'Windows was unable to connect.'
And before anyone asks, yeah, I double-checked the password. It’s definitely right.

Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?

Just type this into your browser's address bar:

192.168.0.1 — once you're there, just use "admin" as the password and hit enter. That should drop you right into your router's settings menu, where you can easily tweak your Wi-Fi name and password. Just head over to the "Wireless" section in the bottom right, then click on "Primary Network" on the left side to find the configuration settings. Go ahead and update the SSID and the password, and then see if your laptop manages to reconnect to the internet okay.

Well, I guess I finally had to just swallow my pride and face the music on this one...

I went ahead and swapped out my password, and wouldn't you know it—it actually worked.

Thanks a ton! 🙂
