WinZip issues

I grabbed it online, but now it's telling me I only have a 40-day trial before they start demanding cash for 😕. Is there any way to actually get the software for good, or am I stuck with that one option?

You'll need to find a serial number if you want full access once those 40 days are up.
If you're having trouble, here are two other great alternatives you might enjoy:
Zip Genius
and 7-Zip

where should I even look if you happen to know? thanks for the links, but unfortunately I really need WinZip—it's the only thing that actually works for opening some of these archives for me.

Maybe try looking on some torrent sites.

I stick with WinZip because it’s just more practical. Those various ZIP formats don't always play nice with everything, whereas RAR-based formats handle both ZIP and RAR files without breaking a sweat. It covers all my bases much better...
Of course, once my trial period expired, the software started acting up. It keeps throwing that annoying pop-up demanding I buy it, but I just hit cancel every single time.
If it doesn't bother you or if you aren't using it constantly, don't worry about it too much...

I honestly don't get why people don't just use the built-in compression in macOS. Is it really that much worse? It drives me crazy when someone sends me a RAR file and I don't happen to have a specific program installed to open it. Why not just use ZIP since everyone can actually open it?!

I’ve been using WinZip 351 CEU for a while now, and honestly, it’s never once given me any trouble or even bothered me with those annoying licensing prompts...

Because WinZip can handle ZIP files too, and it might actually salvage some data from a corrupted file. It’s not a guarantee, obviously, but isn't that better than nothing?

If my memory serves me right, 7-zip handles .rar files just fine! Honestly, there's really no harm in installing both programs on your machine; they won't clash or cause any headaches at all.

I’ve personally spent some time messing around with WinZip, and let me tell you, if you aren't extracting everything through the Mage, the whole thing just falls apart.
I can't be sure if it was just a glitch in those older versions, but back then, WinZip would display the contents of every single subfolder at once. If you tried to use the drag-and-drop method to extract, it was a total disaster... because it would dump specific files into completely the wrong directory.

WinZip doesn't handle that either... Honestly, I don't give a damn about getting a 5% better compression ratio; my only concern is being able to download or upload files without a headache, and the easiest way to do that is just to "rar" the file up.

...or honestly, you could just grab the portable version! That way, there’s absolutely no need to go through a full installation process, and you can just toss the folder whenever you're done with it.

It's super straightforward: just download it, double-click, extract everything, and you're good to go!

So, I’m having a bit of a headache with WinZip. The license expired on me because the tech guy who set up my rig just installed some trial version instead of the real deal.
Basically, it still opens most stuff just fine, but whenever I try to download a movie, I get hit with this error: this archive is either in unknown format or damaged. Honestly, at this point, the software is doing more harm than good. Should I just scrap it and uninstall the thing entirely, or what do you guys think?

Heh, well, I actually did uninstall it. So I grabbed that 7-Zip thing, but even now—like, right when I'm downloading movies—it won't save them in a usable format. It just saves them as this completely unrecognizable junk and then spits out an "invalid file" error. I tried manually picking which program to use to save the files, but it’s still acting up. Before I messed with WinZip, my movie downloads would just automatically link up with BitTorrent—you know, that little green icon would show up next to them. Now? Everything is just a total mess. 🙄
