I honestly have zero clue what you mean about the services, but I know for a fact I haven't touched anything there.

When I boot up my PC, everything just works fine. No system errors, no weird glitches... it’s just sitting there with no score.

Hey everyone, I have a quick question and I’m hoping someone can point me in the right direction. I’m planning to install Windows 7, but I’m a bit stuck on the easiest way to hunt down all the necessary drivers. My initial thought was to use one of those handy little programs that scans your hardware configuration and tells you exactly what to download. The catch? Since Windows 7 isn't even installed yet, I can't actually run the software to check my specs. I'm a total newbie here—can I just dive into the installation and hope for the best, or am I going to be staring at a dead internet connection because I didn't prep my drivers beforehand?
Thanks in advance..

In my experience, Windows 7 handled all the necessary drivers just fine, except for my ancient HP laser printer. I ended up manually triggering a search through Windows 7, which spent about a week hunting them down online before finally getting everything installed.
It really depends on your motherboard and how old the rig is. I guess some of those older Asus and ASRock boards tend to run into certain issues with audio drivers during the first week or so. 🙂

The internet should work without any trouble. 🙂

Got one issue I can't quite pin down. Not sure if it’s tied to Windows 7, but it started acting up right after I installed it.

Basically, right in the middle of working, my screen just blacks out for a split second, then snaps back to normal like nothing even happened.
I’ve already got the latest graphics drivers installed and all my plugins are up to date—honestly, I'm stumped on what else could be causing this. It’s definitely not sleep mode or anything like that, either; it usually happens while I'm actually moving the mouse around.
Could my monitor be dying or something? If anyone knows what's going on, I'd really appreciate the help.

Oh, yeah, did a little digging on Google and saw a bunch of people dealing with this too http://www.engadget.com/2009/12/01/w...-as-it-sounds/ , but for me, it’s just that quick one-second blackout, so I'm still totally lost.

Personally, I had the exact same headache, and just installing the latest graphics drivers fixed it for me. 👍

But since you already said yours are updated... man, I don't know what's hitting your rig.

Douglas Garcia52 said:Until yesterday, my system rating was blacked out when it’s usually blue. I ran a system update and now the whole rating thing just vanished. Tried getting it back, but nothing's working.

I tried refreshing it, same way I always have.

Tried every single combination—you know, the green stuff in the pic—to get it back, but nope, zero luck.

When it starts the refresh process, it hits this part (see pic 3) and just throws an error at me.

Anyone know what the deal is? System Restore isn't gonna save me because the rating was already black before the update. If I roll it back, I'll just be stuck with that black screen again.
Is there some other way to tweak this?
The OS itself is fine, everything runs smooth, it's just this stupid rating messing things up.

Problem solved, though. Didn't need anyone's help.😁
Just did some thinking, messed around with a few ideas, and finally nailed it.😁
Anyway, thanks.👍

Well then, why don't you just write up a full breakdown of how you did it? It might actually be useful for someone else out there. 👍

Roger Brown50 said:How much can this thing actually take? I'm sitting on 2 gigs right now and was thinking about slapping another 2 gigs in there. My motherboard is an ASUS p5kpl-am—can you check if it supports 4 gigs total? Also, I've got an NVIDIA 9600; can I just toss in those extra 2 gigs without breaking anything? It should work since I see there's another RAM slot available, right?

FYI, http://www.asus.com/Search.aspx?SearchKey=p5kpl-am 😉

totally forgot to mention what the actual issue was

The whole mess was because of those K-Lite codecs. And please, don't even start with the "it's impossible" crowd—it's definitely doable. I just ripped out the old K-Lite stuff and installed the >combined community codec pack< instead.

Tried checking the rating again after that and managed to refresh it without any of those annoying error messages popping up. It's working fine now. 👍

hey there 😁

So... I've been sitting here thinking about finally pulling the trigger on installing Windows 7, but I'm feeling a bit anxious about the whole thing. My main worry is losing everything—you know, all my music, photos, movies, and those little digital bits that make up a life 😕
Most of my stuff is tucked away on my E drive, but even then, a part of me is still uneasy..🤷

If anyone out there knows their way around this, could you walk me through what I should do? Is it actually safe to assume that everything sitting on that E drive will stay perfectly intact after a full system wipe and a fresh installation of Windows 7?
Thanks in advance 🙏

Can someone please walk me through this if you know what you're doing? Is it actually safe to assume all the data on my E drive will stay put even after I nuked Windows and did a fresh install of Windows 7?
Thanks in advance! 🙏

It's the safest thing in the world—provided you don't try to shove Windows 7 onto that specific partition. 😬

Just install it on a different partition where you don't have your movies and music sitting around... basically where your old Windows lives, which is usually the "C" drive in most setups
and you won't lose any of your data 👍
but before you touch anything, just be smart and move the important stuff to another partition—your music, your movies—especially if they're spread out across more than one drive

So, I am currently running Windows XP, and since my weekly update cycle is coming up tomorrow, I was wondering if it might be possible to install Windows 7 without having to wipe all my existing programs. To be honest, the idea of reinstalling everything from scratch feels like quite a chore, so I would prefer to avoid it if I can. If this is actually doable, I suppose I would appreciate some guidance on how to go about it, as I am rather hesitant to tinker too much with the installation process without some clear instructions. Thank you.👍

okay 😁 thanks so much 🙂

So... a friend told me I could just borrow a disc with the sedmica on it, and he was acting like I wouldn't need to wipe anything or break any existing setups—just run the installer like I would with any other regular program. That’s how he handled it, at least. :S
I'm feeling a bit lost now. Is it actually possible to do it exactly the way he described?

So... a buddy told me I could just borrow a disc with the week's updates and that I wouldn't even need to break anything. He claimed I could just run a standard installation like any other software. That’s how he handled it, anyway. :S
I'm confused now. Is it actually possible to pull that off the way he described?

Installing and reinstalling Windows 7.

Check the thread below. Choosing "Using The custom" installation and wiping the drive clean.

You basically have two paths when you start the sedmica installation: you can either go for a clean install or choose the upgrade option. If you go with the latter, it'll pull in all your old files automatically.

Is there any way I can actually install the new stuff without having to wipe everything? Honestly, the thought of reinstalling every single one of my programs from scratch sounds like an absolute nightmare, and I really just want to avoid that if possible. I'm also pretty hesitant to start poking around with the installation settings without some solid guidance, because I definitely don't want to mess anything up... If anyone knows how to pull this off without losing all my data and apps, please let me know. Thanks!👍

Hmm...
Man, you can keep everything else... I mean, literally everything... except for the partitions. Seriously, just leave the partitions alone :C...
So, where's Windows hiding? Honestly, if you wiped the drive, those programs are probably sitting on the C drive too, which means you’re likely looking at a full-on reinstall of everything... man, what a headache...

So, here’s how I’ve got my drives set up... I’ve got my E: drive strictly for games, then my C: drive handles all the Windows stuff and my main programs, and finally, I keep my D: drive as a massive storage vault for everything else—you know, all my music, videos, photos, and that kind of thing...
Look, honestly, if you’ve got everything organized and properly sorted on your PC, I really don't think you're going to run into any major headaches when it comes to your data...

if you're running XP right now, you've gotta format everything

anyway, Noah Sanchez39 sent over a link with the step-by-step instructions on how to handle it 👍

An in-place upgrade directly from Windows XP to Windows 7 isn't on the table. You're stuck doing it the long way: you'll have to upgrade to Vista first, and then move from Vista over to Windows 7.
