Greetings, everyone. I am new here, having just discovered this Reddit community. I was hoping someone might be able to offer some guidance regarding my current situation. Is it possible to upgrade from Windows 7 starter? If so, could anyone recommend a reliable website where I can download the necessary files, and is the download process free of charge? Thank you very much for your assistance.

wish I could've been more helpful, 🙂
but honestly, I have zero clue what the actual issue even is

Yeah, you can upgrade, but it’s definitely not free—you'll have to buy the upgrade here.

Oh, I almost forgot to mention—I haven't actually installed Service Pack 1 yet. Could that be part of the problem?

Download details: Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 Release Candidate (KB976932
)
It's an unfinished product. If you've been using Windows update regularly up until now, there's zero reason to rush; just wait for the official release.

Benjamin King2 said:Have you tried bumping up the Windows page file size, adjusting the RAM allocation for Photoshop, or maybe messing with the scratch disk settings?

Yeah, I did—but honestly, nothing changed. I mean, I wasn't exactly waiting for Photoshop to crash mid-project, but the RAM usage was still climbing just as fast as it was before.

Just go buy Windows... and maybe take a second to actually read the rules—piracy isn't allowed here.

Look... Adobe's official stance is basically that CS2 isn't compatible with Windows 7, so you're stuck choosing between updating Photoshop or upgrading Windows.

Ugh, here we go again—another round of fighting with Windows 7 just to get it to wake up from sleep mode. Seriously, what is even the deal with this? It’s like the OS decides to take an unscheduled nap right when I actually need to get stuff done. Anyone else dealing with this nonsense lately, or am I just cursed?
I was just posting a bit ago about how my computer wakes up whenever I so much as nudge the mouse—and Noah Sanchez39 actually gave me some solid advice on how to fix it (so, thanks again for the help there!) 🙂)
But honestly, it’s been acting up again for the last few days—though I can't say I'm exactly surprised myself. 😕
I’ve got Wake-on-LAN disabled, and honestly, I have no clue what the deal is with this thing...
So, I ran some scans using Malwarebytes and NOD32—plus a quick pass with Windows 7 just to be safe—and yeah, NOD32 flagged something suspicious. It was some kind of Java-related virus thing? Honestly, I’m actually at work right now, so I can't exactly dig into the specifics of what it caught. Anyway, it's sitting in quarantine for now, so hopefully that's that.
So, I’m sitting here staring at the screen, wondering... what kind of crazy ideas are we even looking for here? Like, seriously, where do we even start? Are we talking about a total software overhaul, some wild new project, or just something to pass the time while we wait for our systems to catch up? Give me something to work with! What's on everyone's mind?

Any ideas what this could be?

Maybe try asking over in the "IT Help & Security" subforum (link) 😉instead.

I know, I know, I get it... but the point is I *had* genuine Windows. It doesn't matter how I got them or where they came from, they were legit. But then I move to a different city and lose my go-to tech guy who used to fix everything for me. That’s the bigger issue. Since I don't know anyone else around here who actually knows what they're doing with computers, I take my rig to a local repair shop. And what do I get? 😲 I end up with "those" versions of Windows, and the technician insists they were already like that when I brought them in 😕 instead of being the originals 🙂 so now I've lost my legitimate software and just ended up with a massive headache instead 😠

haha so is there actually a thread around here where we can talk about downloading stuff illegally and those sketchy pirate versions of Windows that, let’s be honest, pretty much everyone is running anyway? I really don't want to catch a ban over something so trivial, and I definitely am not about to drop a hundred bucks on a license when anyone with half a brain can just whip up a perfectly fine $17 using a key and all that other magic to make it look like a "genuine" copy. thanks

So what specifically are you looking for regarding piracy? You can't really talk openly about cracking stuff on here
but there are plenty of other forums out there—just do a little digging on 👍

I can't believe I'm even typing this—it’s like we're living in a digital museum at this point—but here we go. I was looking through some old files earlier (don't ask why, curiosity is a curse) and realized just how much we rely on legacy setups that should have been retired years ago. It’s wild. We’re all out here trying to run modern workflows on systems that feel like they belong in a Smithsonian exhibit, yet somehow, we make it work. Or we try to. Anyway, just a thought floating around my head while I struggle with my current setup. kaže:
Look, I get it—I really do. I know what people are going to say, but the bottom line is that I had an original version of Windows. It doesn't matter where it came from or how it happened—it was legit, okay? It was authentic. But then life happens—I move to a different city—and suddenly I lose my go-to guy, the only tech person I actually trusted to touch my rig. That’s a huge headache right there. So, since I don't exactly have a circle of IT geniuses to call for help, I did what anyone would do: I took my computer to a local repair shop. I figured, "Hey, they're professionals, they'll fix the issue." And what do I get? Just great. 😲 So I get my hands on these Windows 7 files—which, let's be honest, is already a trip down memory lane—and this guy has the audacity to look me dead in the eye and swear they were always like this. Like, seriously? As if that’s a valid technical argument. It's one of those moments where you just have to stare at them in silence for a second before realizing they aren't joking. Just total nonsense. 😕 Wait, so we aren't doing the original? Honestly—fair enough. Sometimes you just have to scrap the script and start from scratch if you want things to actually make sense. Keeping things fresh is usually better anyway—less predictable, less robotic—you know what I mean? Anyway, let me know how you want to play this. 🙂 So, I ended up losing the original file—and honestly? All I got in return was a massive headache. Just a total mess of problems where there used to be actual work. 😠

I don't know what kind of magic you're working with over there—it sounds like some kind of specialized toolkit or maybe just a very optimistic way to describe manual labor—but honestly, if you've got "super hands," you're probably already three steps ahead of the rest of us mere mortals. Just try not to break anything while you're busy being superhuman, alright? kaže:
Heh, I remember seeing some thread floating around where people were actually debating illegal downloads and those sketchy pirate versions of Windows that—let’s be honest—pretty much everyone is running anyway. I didn't want to jump in there and risk getting banned over something so trivial—and honestly, why would I drop a hundred bucks on software when anyone with half a brain can figure out how to get it for free? $17 With the key and all the other stuff included—it’s a genuine copy!! thanks!

Is the internet actually dying, or is it just this forum? Seriously, have you guys heard about Google? Half the web is just a massive dump of pirated junk anyway, and then you’ve got people here asking the exact same repetitive questions over and over again... honestly, it’s exhausting. ☕

Benjamin King2, I'm going to talk about piracy and there isn't a thing you can say to stop me 😛

so, what was the last ship you guys raided?

😂

(sorry, I just had to 😁 😁 )

Speaking of Windows 7... is anyone else here dealing with Intel network cards that seem to act up a bit after installing drivers through Windows Update?

How does one increase the RAM available to a specific program? 😕

What kind of issues are you running into exactly?
On my laptop, I found that after a certain update, network discovery just stopped working entirely. It turns out that once I disabled my firewall, everything went back to normal. Apparently, the update managed to wipe out all my inbound and outbound firewall rules!
