Joshua Garcia3 said:Look, just open up that file you grabbed—if it's tucked inside a zip or rar, make sure you unpack it onto your hard drive first. Find the actual driver you're trying to install (.exe file), right-click it, go to Properties, then Compatibility. Check the box that says "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" and pick either Windows Vista or Windows XP from the dropdown menu. Hit Apply, hit OK, and you're done. Simple enough, right? 🙂

thanks
guess I know what to do next time 👍

Look, I know I’m probably going to make everyone's hair stand on end here, and I'm fully aware that at least fifty people have already asked this exact same thing, but you guys have to understand—there is just way too much text in this thread for me to sit here and read through everything from the very beginning 🙂

So, what I really want to know is, am I actually able to run basically any game (I don't mean those ancient relics from decades ago, obviously... because I'm pretty sure even I couldn't run those) on Windows 7 64-bit?

Thanks!

can I run all my games (not the ancient stuff, obviously... I know those won't work) on Windows 7 64-bit?

thanks

yeah, you're good...

Which ones? Give me some titles. 🤔

So, can you actually play games on
Windows 7 64-bit?
I tried it myself and couldn't get Call of Duty 4 to run for the life of me, even though it works perfectly fine on the 32-bit version. What gives?

As for me, I've been playing this exact same game for a whole week now on Windows 7 64-bit, and honestly, I haven't run into a single hiccup or issue.

I didn't really check out what kind of GPU his buddy is rocking, so maybe that's why it tanked... plus, it's a pirated copy, so who knows? Maybe I messed up the crack or something.

I'm currently running Windows Vista, and I was wondering if making the jump to Windows 7 is actually worth it? 🤷
What kind of improvements would I really see by switching to 7?

What am I even getting out of the upgrade?

Man, I haven't even messed with Vista myself, but I've heard enough guys talking trash about it to know it's a total disaster.
Windows 7, though? That thing is solid. Honestly, I'm pretty stoked with how it runs.

I mean, I know for a fact
Windows 7 isn't such a resource hog compared to Vista. It uses way less RAM.

What kind of perks would I even get from moving to the 7 version?

Oh, absolutely—without a second thought.

What's the actual benefit of moving to 7?

Here is a quick breakdown:

What kind of benefits would I really see from moving up to the seventh iteration?

In terms of how it looks, you won't notice much of a difference, but you'll definitely feel a bit more speed and overall stability when you're actually getting things done.

Just a total noob question here: does Windows automatically install all the drivers?
Basically, I just finished setting up Windows 7 and haven't manually installed a single thing yet, but everything seems to be working perfectly fine; audio, graphics, the whole nine yards 😕

You don't strictly have to, though you certainly can if you feel like it. Personally, I always grab the latest graphics drivers just for stability, but I've never seen any real reason to bother updating sound or anything else.

Yeah, it does. Though, I guess some motherboards—ASUS, for example—can be finicky with audio, so you might have to handle that manually. If you want, you could always grab newer graphics drivers; the factory ones are probably better than whatever generic Windows versions are running, but honestly, if everything is working fine, I wouldn't mess with it. 🙂

I did a clean install of Windows, I wasn't talking about an update 🙂. If the graphics start acting up, then I'll look into installing something. Thanks for the input.

Thanks for the reply 🙂. This is actually a huge relief since hunting down drivers online is such a headache :S

Joshua Garcia3 said:Yeah, look—some motherboards, like certain ASUS models, can be a total pain during sound installation, forcing you to manually fix things afterward. If you really want to, you can try installing newer graphics drivers; the manufacturer ones are almost always superior to those generic Windows versions. But honestly? If everything is running smooth, just leave it alone. 🙂

That doesn't necessarily mean anything. For me, a handful of my games actually run better on last week's drivers than they do with the absolute latest Catalyst updates... damn it, there's less stuttering. I guess you can actually tweak settings in Catalyst, whereas with the generic stuff, you don't have any control at all...

And since the latest update crashed my resolution right out of the gate, I've ditched Catalyst for now...

Does anyone actually know which updates are safe to grab and which ones are total junk when you're dealing with a version of Windows that doesn't exactly have a spotless pedigree? I'm talking about those less-than-official builds that haven't exactly been through the ringer of standard verification. If you've got the lowdown on what's good and what's bad, hit me up in a DM—I'd rather not brick my machine by being reckless.
