Taylor Morales31 said:You don't necessarily have to format the whole drive. Maybe try going into the Windows Old folder and deleting things piece by piece? Just grab a few files at a time, delete them, then repeat the process. Usually, you can't just wipe the whole thing in one go. If there's some tiny stubborn leftover, I guess you could try using an unlocker tool to force it through. 👍

I guess I knew what I was doing, but I still ended up deleting something I probably shouldn't have. Everything worked fine after the fresh install, though. 🙄, whatever. 🙂

Look, fine. There’s a whole spectrum of ways to handle this. He claimed it was impossible to delete, so I was just laying out how I actually managed to get it done 👍

Look, there's more than one way to skin a cat. Some people prefer to make a massive scene, while others just take a more subtle approach. It really comes down to how much access you have, what you actually know, and the tools at your disposal. But honestly, the most important thing is making sure everything is wiped clean during a fresh Windows 7 installation. You just hit that format button on the hard drive... it's right there. I guess after you've gone through a second or third install, you eventually figure out how easy it is. 🙂 👍

I don't think I'm even getting the option to format during the installation process. Honestly, I’m too lazy to fix my DVD drive since I don't even really need one anymore—I'll just install from another partition via Windows XP or grab a USB stick. I assume if I were using a DVD, that formatting option would actually show up like it used to. 👍

edit: It specifically tells me that a previous version of Windows is already present and that it's going to rename it "Windows Old" once the new one is finished. It isn't giving me any choice to format; it's just showing me "Load Drivers" and nothing else.

So, I’m running Windows 7 and everything seems to be functioning perfectly, except for one minor headache. I have two partitions set up, and Windows 7 is installed on the primary one. When I first finished the installation, I had about 6 GB of free space left, but that has steadily dwindled down to just 2 GB. The catch is, I haven't installed a single thing on that partition lately, so I have no idea where the space is vanishing to. I’ve tried messing around with various disk management tools, but nothing has yielded any answers. Does anyone have any insight into what might be causing this? Thanks.

Did you follow these guidelines:

If you're using legitimate versions of Windows, they should upgrade without issues.

It’s not really an option for me since I'm running a 64-bit system. They don't offer upgrades this way, so I won't be seeing any automatic updates anytime soon.

I mean, I guess you might need to just clear out your system restore points entirely. Maybe just leave like two or three in there if you're feeling cautious. Also, if you’ve got enough physical RAM—like, say, 3 or 4 gigs—you could try capping the pagefile at maybe 2 GB max. I did that for myself and everything seems totally fine, even though the standard advice is usually to set it to 1.5 times your actual RAM, but who knows, right?
You could also just try disabling system restore altogether if things seem to be running smooth, then just flip it back on later.

Alright, thanks everyone. I'm going to try out a few of these suggestions and see how things pan out.

I’m running Windows 7 32-bit.
So, here’s the deal: I turn the machine on, everything works fine, and then I put it into Standby mode. When I wake it back up to get things moving again, that's when the headache starts. I power it up, but the screen just stays completely black—no signal, nothing.
Does anyone have a clue what might be causing this?

Also, just out of curiosity, what’s the actual difference between Windows 7 32-bit and the 64-bit version? 😁

I hope I'm in the right place, but please excuse me if I missed the mark...
Basically, I’m looking to tweak Windows 7 so that every file and folder acts more like a hyperlink. My goal is to avoid having to double-click everything; I'd love for the cursor to switch to that "hand" icon you see when hovering over a web link, allowing me to open files or folders with just a single click. I used to be able to do this back on Windows 98, but it's been quite a long time and I've completely forgotten the process...

So, Standby is basically just a preparation state.
But seriously... why does this keep happening to me?

You really ought to dig into those BIOS power settings... specifically the ACPI suspend type—try toggling that to S1&S3—and double-check if your Wake on settings are actually enabled. It’s all about making sure they align with how Windows handles power management. Sometimes, the BIOS settings will just straight-up override whatever you've configured in Windows, and that's usually where things start falling apart.

so why the hell is this happening to me?

Well, you didn't mention if you're messing with a laptop or a desktop, which kind of matters, I guess. Some laptops can be total nightmares when it comes to actually waking up from Standby—sorry, "prep mode"—so that might be part of the headache. But if you're running a desktop, you should probably go check out that post from Benjamin King2. In the BIOS, there should be maybe four or five different settings related to suspend and another four or five for Wake on. Honestly, if I were you, I'd just disable all those Wake on settings; I mean, unless you're some tech wizard trying to boot your rig over a LAN connection or something, you probably don't even need them, right?

So, here’s the situation: I see the icon sitting right there on my desktop, and when I fire up my laptop, everything seems to kick on, but then... nothing. My desktop monitor just stays completely blank. It's like it's ignoring me.
I'm working with an HP Compaq 6735s—what's the best way to troubleshoot this so I can actually get a picture on the screen?

Man, that part actually caught my eye. Does anyone out there know a decent tutorial on how to pull that off?
Like, say I wanted to use a laptop to boot an OS onto a desktop via a LAN cable... any chance someone could point me in the right direction?
If it's not too much trouble, obviously.

Thanks.

😁
Do you actually have an image on the screen at all? Try hitting Fn+F4.

If it's not too much trouble.

Thanks.
