I wasn't even surprised that my post would trigger all this talk about picking games, people living 186 miles outside of Chicago, counting attendance, complaining about not being able to make every match, or labeling people as posers. I’m honestly shocked nobody mentioned the moody stares or the kids in tracksuits, white sneakers, and Fred Perry shirts.
Since I apparently have to spell it out... obviously, someone living outside of Chicago 124 miles isn't going to be there every single week (with exceptions, I guess), and life happens—work, family, money issues, and stuff like that.
As for casual fans versus the die-hards, I don't have any beef with anyone. I don't look down on anybody. I don't care if someone lives in Chicago and can't make every game, either. I mean, a casual fan is still probably more dedicated than the specific people my post was actually talking about.
My post was specifically calling out "Pero," who lives right here in Chicago. He spends his Saturday afternoons doing whatever he wants, he's definitely not broke, and he used to be part of the core group a few years back. But now? He doesn't show up to matches because maybe Mamić ruined it for him, or maybe he's just over it. He's been MIA for 20 or 30 games straight... but the second there's a big trip to "Paris, Vienna, or Amsterdam," suddenly everything is fine, and "Pero" grabs his passport and heads for Europe. Maybe he'll show up to one local game before or after the trip just so people don't notice he's gone, and then it's "ciao, guys" until the next big Champions League away leg.
I don't really care if some guy from the suburbs who was never a real fan goes to Amsterdam just because he saw Dinamo is playing and wants a vacation, but I just can't wrap my head around people like "Pero." Not to mention the crowd that travels for more European away games in a season than they do for local games, even at Yankee Stadium. So, what's with all the counting?
I think I'll stop replying now. It feels like I'm trying to defend the fact that 2+2=4.
I get all five, but "Paris, Vienna, Amsterdam" are even further from "Chicago," so it's even more likely you won't get in. Only about 120 people go, whereas 500 could fit there.
It just shows how little people here get it, even the ones who attend games. In a thread about Western Europe, someone posted a link saying pyrotechnics were legalized in Norwegian stadiums, and I think a guy under the name "Spectator" wrote what I think is the only sensible thing said: that one smuggled flare is worth more than ten of those legal ones in Norway. And the kid got attacked from every angle—called a hypocrite and all that. Saying "legalize pyro" doesn't literally mean we want them to hand us flares; it means we shouldn't be treated like we're smuggling grenades into the stadium. Honestly, if pyrotechnics were legalized tomorrow, we probably wouldn't even light them first. We have weddings and BBQs for that kind of stuff.
Cheers to everyone... the moody stares, the loudmouths, the kids with telescopes, the outsiders, and the nobodies alike.
