Edward Grant30 said:It seems like you don't quite get how movie earnings actually work, because this film is a massive flop. The studio doesn't even see 50% of the money from international distribution, and that percentage drops even further the longer the movie stays in theaters. With a total budget of $150 million, this thing needs to pull in at least $400 million just to break even. Right now, it hasn't even hit $100 million, and it's already been playing for over two weeks.
That was the deal ten years ago, but nowadays a ton of movies are basically built just to cater to the Chinese market—look at those recent Transformers flicks.
A lot of studios also learned their lesson after John Carter, which was a total disaster in the US but actually did okay overseas.
I mean, John Carter was breaking records in Russia.
I don't know all the specifics on this one, but I bet it made more in China after just three days than it did in the US:
Budget: $140M.
Total earnings: $108M.
Breakdown:
China: $19M (after 5 days)
USA: $27M (after over 20 days)

After a few similar movies tanking like this, I honestly think we're seeing the end of the new "sword and sandal" era, at least for the US market.
