There's everything from kickboxing and Muay Thai to traditional boxing. If you're looking for something more specialized, you can find Ninjutsu, Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, and various styles of Karate. For those interested in different disciplines, there's Tai Chi, wrestling, Krav Maga, Aikido, Capoeira, Kendo, and Wing Tsun available too.

Brother, feel free to share whatever is on your mind. I'm all ears.

I honestly didn't realize there were so many options available. It just seems a bit overwhelming to track them all down. It would be incredibly helpful if there was some kind of centralized directory listing the clubs and their locations... 🙂 I'm having a hard time making a final decision. I find myself leaning toward something like Aikido or Tai Chi—more defensive, flow-based skills. Though, I worry they might be a little too static for me. I'm not an expert, so I might be wrong, but that's just my initial impression...

Just type the name of the skill along with your city into Google, and you'll almost certainly find a local studio offering it, since most places have them. You could head over and try out a single session from a few different spots before making a final call. Though, keep in mind that one class isn't quite enough to get a true feel for it—but that's still much better than just following random advice from the internet.

If you're interested in Tai Chi, reach out to Miguel... he runs one of the three or four clubs in the area...

I'll do a bit of digging to see what's out there first, then decide. Thanks.🙂

Morgan Alvarez3 said:I checked out Holy Spirit yesterday, and I guess it seems alright overall. My only real concern is how crowded it gets—especially with all the beginners—while there are only two instructors on hand. I’m just not sure how much individual attention I’d actually get, which feels important if I want to nail the technique and movement properly.

Before committing, I’d love to scout out some boxing gyms, so I’m definitely open to recommendations. I heard about a place over in the Quad area, maybe called Omega? It isn't showing up in my local directory, so I'm honestly not even sure how to track them down...

Check this out... [link]

Greetings to everyone. It is highly probable that this exact question has been posed a million times before, but here we go anyway:
I am 21 years old, standing 195 cm tall and weighing approximately 90 kg. I used to play basketball quite frequently on a recreational basis, but over the last few years, I have completely lost my conditioning. I have always harbored an interest in practicing some form of martial arts—strictly recreationally, of course—but I am genuinely at a loss as to which discipline would suit me best. Does anyone have any recommendations? Ideally, I would prefer something located near Jarun...

If you're starting from scratch, stick to boxing, Muay Thai, or wrestling.

placidbison20, is it true? Do you have any verified info regarding whether this forum will start charging fees? I was just reading that serious discussions are happening about it over on the Pets forum... let me know. 😲 🤷

Morgan Alvarez3: I just saw the news. Absolutely wild. My jaw is still on the floor. You guys seeing this? This changes everything. kaže:
I hit up Holy Spirit yesterday, and honestly, the vibe was pretty good. My only real concern is the crowd. It’s packed—especially with beginners—and there were only two instructors on the floor. I’m a bit worried about how much attention a coach can actually give me when it’s that busy. I really want to make sure I’m learning the right way to strike and move, you know? Proper technique is everything.

I’m thinking about checking out some boxing gyms first, so if anyone has recommendations, I’m all ears. I heard about this one club over in the Quad area—I think it's called Omega—but I can't find them in any directory. Honestly, I have no clue how to even track them down...

There are three coaches on staff... look, if everyone else who’s been training here for a while has leveled up, it’s obvious these guys know exactly what they're doing. Trust me, they definitely do. 😉
They push technique hard at this club, so you’re definitely going to pick it up. Personally, I think it’s even better than those one-on-one private sessions. There's just something about the group energy that really pushes the learning process further.😉
Honestly, in any serious gym or club, you’re rarely going to find a coach hovering over you for the entire session. They don't need to. It’s just not necessary.

Take a look at this. If you aren't feeling it, we move on. 🙂

Does anyone have any thoughts on "SPARTAN GYM"? I'd love to hear some reviews, pros, cons, or even just a little bit of advice if you've been there! Thanks! 😁

Good day,
Please forgive my sudden descent into this thread like a malfunctioning parachute, but I have a question and I didn't want to clutter things up by starting a whole new topic if the answer happens to be brief. I trust I’ve found the right place.
It concerns the intersection of morality and professional titles.
Given that martial arts are inherently tied to specific codes of conduct, I wonder if there are precedents where an official sanctioning body strips a title—say, a World Champion belt—from an individual if they are proven to be a criminal? Specifically, someone who actually utilizes their physical skills to facilitate their illicit activities.
By "proven," I am referring specifically to formal court convictions.
Anyway, I hope that makes sense.

Anyone here actually training or used to do MMA? Looking for some real-world insight—what’s been your experience, any advice, or specific gyms you’d recommend?

If you happen to be in the Chicago area, check out UFK Trešnjevka or UFK Dubrava.

So, I’m 20 years old, and I actually walked away from Shotokan Karate about three years back. Since then, I’ve managed to pack on maybe 15kg or so, so at 5'4", I'm sitting at around 187lbs right now. For context, I used to be a brown belt. Anyway, I'm living in Chicago now, and a few days ago, this sudden urge hit me to get back into training. I’m not really looking to enter any tournaments or anything; honestly, it's just a personal desire to get back in shape, mostly for my own health. So, does anyone know of a Shotokan club here in Chicago where someone like me—basically a retired martial artist trying to find their groove again—could get back into form? I'm strictly talking recreation, nothing competitive. 😁
Since I’m working full-time, I’ll need to balance everything with my job, but hey, if it’s possible, it’s doable, I guess. Three sessions a week would probably be the sweet spot for me. If anyone could let me know ASAP, I’d appreciate it. Also, I’d really rather not be lumped in with a class of total beginners—well, unless I actually am one, which might be the case, who knows? 🙂 ...

Thanks a ton in advance for any help... 👍
