I don't think you should just show up empty-handed. There’s a chance they might require an appointment first, so honestly, give them a call and ask before you make the trip to the hospital.

I have a CT scan scheduled, and they told me that for the day before, I should only eat
meat and potatoes, then show up fasting the next morning for the imaging

Does anyone know if it's actually okay to just stick to meat and potatoes the day before?
Honestly, I'm dreading it. How am I supposed to get through the day without my morning coffee, or even just a little salad?

Thanks

I know this is going to sound absolutely horrific, but you'll actually survive one day without your coffee and kale salad for the sake of your health, won't you?😁

Yeah, I definitely have to

Honestly, if a nurse prescribed my husband a menu like that, he’d be asking her out on a date in a heartbeat.

If you want any kind of decent results from your radiology scans, you actually have to prepare properly. It’s not just a suggestion; the whole thing hinges on it. Honestly, all that nonsense about skipping your morning coffee and stuff? Total garbage. I refuse to go through life without my caffeine fix.

I have a bit of a silly question, but I’m genuinely curious so I figured I'd ask. I’ve been doing all sorts of prenatal research lately. Right now, I’m stuck with an old insurance card because my new one hasn't arrived yet, even though I've officially changed my last name. When I show up at the hospital, what should I do? Should I try to fold this printout—which is actually two sheets since it was printed from a computer, not a handy little card you can just tuck away—should I use my old card, or just use the supplemental insurance showing the new name? I have a feeling if I show up with the supplemental info, they might give me some dirty looks. 😬

Just make sure you bring an ID where the first and last names match what’s on your insurance card. And when they call your name at the service desk, have your driver's license ready to go. Your Social Security number and basic record info stay exactly the same, even if you change your last name.

What’s the going rate for a sleep study to check for snoring at a facility in a place like Bethesda, assuming you don't have supplemental insurance?

So, I’ve been staring at these booking sites for ages... should I go with the food allergy test from Holy Spirit Hospital or just hit up the local clinic? Is there actually any difference between them? Because honestly—the first opening they have for the general clinic isn't until July, but Holy Spirit can squeeze me in in about 12 days... 🤔 Plus, does anyone know where I can get a TTG (transglutaminase) test done on my rib? I've been scouring their website trying to find a specific outpatient center that handles it—since I'm trying to book everything online—but I am coming up totally empty-handed...

Does it matter whether I visit the Social Security office in Samobor or downtown in the city?

My permanent address is in Samobor, but I'm currently staying in the city. I need to bring some paperwork to a new doctor here—specifically an official verification from the local Social Security office—and then head back to Samobor to pick up my medical files from my old physician. I was thinking about calling the office, but if anyone here knows, can I just handle this at the Samobor branch, or is it safer to deal with the city office directly?

How long is the typical wait time for an ovarian ultrasound at the Mayo Clinic? Thanks!

I was hoping I could get some help from the doctors hanging out on this forum.

I’m looking for some guidance on who I should reach out to—maybe via email—regarding Vitamin D supplementation.
Every doctor I've consulted so far—whether it was my primary care physician, an immunologist, or even a dermatologist—hasn't really been able to give me much insight into the specifics...
I’m honestly feeling a bit lost on who might actually have a deep understanding of Vitamin D in relation to autoimmune diseases—someone who can dive into the more complex questions I have...

Thanks in advance

Does anyone know if there’s an official fee schedule for those of us covered by basic health insurance? I’ve got this injury—if I can't find somewhere else to go, I might have to head to the ER—so I’m trying to figure out what the bill might look like before I decide whether to make the trip.

Hey everyone.

So, here I am at 27 years old—which, honestly, feels far too young for this—dealing with such intense pain that I can barely function as a normal human being.

It all started pretty subtly back in April. At first, I thought I could just manage it with some over-the-counter pills or topical creams. There were stretches where things felt okay, but lately... well, things have taken a turn for the absolute worst. It’s become impossible to even stand still for two minutes without this agonizing pain hitting me; I’m basically living on painkillers at this point.

I went to see my primary care physician, and initially, she just prescribed some standard medication and suggested some B-complex vitamins. Since none of that did a single thing to help, she finally gave me a referral for a physiatrist and physical therapy.

The problem is, the earliest appointment I can get for an evaluation in Chicago is late August.
I’ve been bouncing from one clinic to another, but nobody seems able to squeeze me in any sooner. I feel like I'm going to lose my mind from the pain and the constant cycle of popping pills before then.

If anyone has any advice on how I might be able to expedite getting seen, I would really appreciate it.
Also, if I decide to go to a private physiatrist instead, would I still be able to use my insurance referral later on for therapy sessions somewhere else? It doesn't matter which doctor I see, really—I just need someone to prescribe a treatment plan that I can actually carry out at a facility in Chicago as soon as possible.

Any advice or information you can share would be incredibly helpful.

Which lab should I go to for bloodwork if my doctor is located at the clinic on Iveković Street?

The OB-GYN sent me for some tests, but since I just switched over to a new primary care physician, I have no clue which lab is linked to my file. Anyone know how this works? 🙂

Just got my checkup at the hospital, and the folks at the front desk told me they're just going to mail the bill straight to my house since I don't have any extra health insurance coverage.
They did some X-rays on my hips and lower spine. Any idea what kind of damage I'm looking at financially? Thanks.

Well, I ended up paying out of pocket for my spinal work myself $17.

So, here I am at just 27 years old, dealing with sciatica so bad that I can barely function like a normal human being.

It all started pretty subtly back in April. At first, I thought I could just manage it on the fly with some over-the-counter pills and topical creams. There were stretches where things felt okay, but lately, everything has just gone south. It’s getting brutal. I can’t even stand still for two minutes without this excruciating pain hitting me, so I’ve basically been living on painkillers.

I went to see my primary care doctor, and she initially just threw some meds and B-complex vitamins at me. When that didn't do squat, she finally wrote me a referral for a physiatrist and physical therapy.

The problem is, the earliest appointment I can snag for a specialist in Chicago is late August.
I’ve been bouncing from one clinic to another, but nobody can squeeze me in any sooner. Honestly, I feel like I'm going to lose my mind from the pain and having to pop pills every single day until then.

If anyone has any advice on how to fast-track an appointment, please let me know.
Also, if I decide to go to a private physiatrist instead, can I still use my insurance referral later to get treatment somewhere else? I don't really care which specialist I see, as long as they can prescribe a treatment plan that I can actually follow through with somewhere in the city.

Any tips or info would be hugely appreciated.

Honestly, it might make more sense to try and see a neurologist first.
It sounds like you've been stuck in this loop for quite a while now, 🙄.

When you're in that acute, "everything hurts" phase, standard physical therapy doesn't actually have much it can do for you.
For right now, you really need rest—and by rest, I mean staying in bed a lot—along with pain management, whether that's pills, injections, or those medicated patches. Once things settle down a bit and you're out of the worst of it, that's when seeing a physiatrist actually starts to make sense.
What kind of diagnostic tests have you had done so far?

So, I went in for an X-ray on my spine—everything else was handled by my primary care physician. Initially, she put me on a three-day course of injections combined with some pills. Things settled down for a little bit after that, but now the pain is back, and honestly, it feels worse than ever.
I’ve spent the entire day calling doctors all over the city, and the best anyone can offer is an appointment at the end of August.

I'm actually considering just heading straight to the ER tonight.
I do have a referral in hand, though—it specifies outpatient physical therapy.

The co-pay for hip and spine imaging is basically... $17
