You probably think you're seeing some old guy with a white beard just because you were binge-watching Lord of the Rings while having an Odyssey playing in the background.

brightpilot6 said:Fair point. I suppose the spaceship doesn't actually exist either, and the entire film is just some fever dream being had by that monkey who got hit with the ink at the start?

A monkey who took a hit to the face is out here dreaming about wearing a white jersey.

I guess *2001: A Space Odyssey* isn't really about creationism. Even though the movie doesn't explicitly say so—though the book does—it seems more like it's about an ancient civilization that evolved on its own and then decided to spread its influence across the universe. They basically planted seeds of intelligence on various planets to see where things might take root. The monoliths act as markers of success, I suppose. Once a civilization reaches a certain level of development, they eventually make it to the Moon to find a monolith, then head toward Jupiter for the next one, and so on. That final scene is pretty confusing, but it feels like some kind of cosmic zoo where this advanced race keeps all the species they've cultivated, including those humans they just picked up.

It’s probably a bit tough to tackle creationism here. I guess it's more closely tied to things like animal husbandry, colonization, and evolution.

If Kubrick were directing an Odyssey today, would he even bother with a costume design phase? Wouldn't the monkeys simply start the film clad in red and blue jerseys, only to transform into pure white once that monolith finally makes its appearance?

Maybe drop a few little summaries here and there—some folks might just want to catch a quick glimpse before deciding whether to actually sit through the movie or pick up the book just to grasp the core plot. ☕

Then I suppose we should head over to ESPN for a truly accurate interpretation of everything.

When ruggedjackal46 catches sight of an offside call, he reacts like he’s just stumbled upon a burning bush, approaching the posts with a look of pure dejection to take the news.

When can we finally expect some kind of powerhouse dynasty to emerge for you Real Madrid fans?

Just to be clear, we’re basically dropping monoliths all over the place.

That’s exactly why we’re backing them. We’ve already pulled off three this season alone. ☕

The idea that your giants are untouchable is nothing more than a perception—a collective illusion born from the perceived might of an organization like the UEFA. ☕

The Monolith is a higher principle—it’s the very essence of what makes football great, the driving force that elevates the game and fuels Barcelona's rise. Of course, a die-hard Real Madrid fan wouldn't be able to wrap their head around a concept that massive; to them, it probably just looks like some bearded old man, likely a fascist clutching a rifle.

It’s probably a good thing Kubrick wasn't around to film Barcelona's trophy run; I imagine we would have been subjected to hours of agonizingly slow shots of clock hands spinning, eventually culminating in some rococo parlor where Tom Henning Ovrebo spends an eternity atoning for his sins.

man, how does a little kid even wrap their head around something like that with their old man?

my first thought when I hear "monolith" is basically just thinking about Arbeloa

The Monolith generates intelligence, the Monolith illuminates the path, and the Monolith elevates us to a higher plane.

There are actually three distinct roles here: 🙏🙏🙏

The first—the creator—is God, the second—the one who guides the way—is Jesus, and the third—the force that uplifts—is the Holy Spirit.

To people who don't know what "common knowledge" even means—or just the trolls—it isn't.

I’ve been reading through some of your comments, and frankly, it seems many of you have missed the point of what’s actually happening in *2001: A Space Odyssey*. Why on earth would the monolith be on the Moon instead of somewhere on Earth? Why did the first monolith target "monkeys"—though, let's be honest, there weren't many of them? And why was the pyramid from the original story, *The Sentinel*, swapped out for a monolith in the final film?
It strikes me that most of you fail to grasp the sheer craftsmanship involved here. Kubrick was a technical perfectionist to his core, and that's exactly why we don't see clunky artificial gravity or ridiculous sci-fi tropes. In this film, space is silent. When those airlocks open, you hear the hiss of pressure equalization and all those subtle, heavy details that make the world feel tactile. It remains incredibly unique. Before this, sci-fi movies were busy chasing big, bulging monsters from Mars; *Odyssey* took an entirely different path, and that is precisely why the film is a masterpiece.

Look, those political types—all those partisans and old-guard extremists—they don't give a damn about you. Honestly, they wouldn't even touch an SF classic just to score some cheap points in an internal argument. They've got much bigger fish to fry.

I've been sitting here listening to some lectures by John Perisic, just trying to wrap my head around what kind of move I should make next...

What's the consensus among you all?
