I was actually planning on checking out that tutorial on the PCI forum earlier today, but I can't even get the overclocking thread to load on there (tried every browser I have, too). I've been trying to Google some kind of guide, but honestly, I can't find anything decent for beginners. Maybe I'll try searching one more time, but if nothing pops up, I guess I'm stuck. Thanks for the help, everyone.

Does anyone have a solid link or maybe a tutorial for overclocking an Intel Core 2 Duo 4800+ 2.5ghz?

You can find a decent tutorial on the PC Gamer forums regarding AM2 overclocking if you look hard enough.😉

I can't seem to get this PCI thread to open, no matter which browser I try. It just keeps loading some tiny gif (showthread.gif 1x1 pixels) instead of the actual page. Any idea how to fix this? It’s happened on a few other sites too. I know it's a little off-topic, but since the link is for an overclocking thread, I figured I'd ask here.

Can anyone tell me if it's actually possible to overclock this CPU?
Intel Core i7

Thanks!

Sure thing—just let me know exactly which processor model you're running.

Maybe an Intel Core i5

Intel Core i7 2 x3.0GHz

THANKS!

Which specific model are we talking about?

Is it an E6850 or an Intel Core i5?

Also, what kind of CPU cooler are you using?
Please let me know the rest of your specs and your power supply.

Oh, please, give me a break...
If he had just put even a tiny bit of effort into his very first post, maybe I would have actually bothered to reply to him.

There isn't a single piece of punctuation in the whole thing, and instead of a polite "thank you," he just writes "TNX." Honestly, what does "TNX" even mean? It’s absolutely nothing...

You aren't even close. (By the way, in certain alphabets, X actually stands for K)

Intel Core i5
Gigabyte P35-DS3 motherboard.
2x2GB Kingmax 800MHz RAM.
Seagate ST3500820AS 500 GB hard drive—SATA 300 MB/s, NCQ support, 7200 RPM.
I was looking at the Corsair 450W unit earlier—not exactly a powerhouse, but it gets the job done if you aren't trying to run a high-end gaming rig. It’s fine for a basic setup, though I wouldn't recommend pairing it with anything too power-hungry. Just a thought.
The Sharkon Rebel 9 economy—it’s a bit of a mixed bag, honestly. I was looking into it the other day while thinking about my own setup, and there are definitely some trade-offs you have to weigh before jumping in. It’s not exactly a slam dunk, but it has its moments.

Are you using the stock cooler?
You can actually get some really impressive overclocking results. Your only real hurdle is going to be the temperature.
If you just pick up a decent liquid cooler, you won't have to worry about it at all.

I'm not entirely sure which cooler I've got installed, but I'm pretty sure it isn't the stock one

Well, once you open it up and take a look, if you see a tiny little heatsink, then you're definitely looking at the stock cooler.
But if you spot something a bit more substantial 😁 then you can breathe easy and stop worrying.

That said, the cooler itself isn't exactly expensive; you could pick up a Cooler Master Hyper 212 for just $60...

Just one question... I’ve got an Intel E 8200 running at a default frequency of 2.66 GHz, but I've overclocked it to 3.0 GHz. Is it actually safe to just leave the processor at that speed and use the computer normally without worrying about anything breaking?

I don't really have much experience with this stuff, so sorry if this sounds like a dumb question... I just don't want to risk ruining anything.🙂

I don't really have much experience with this kind of thing, so please forgive me if this sounds like a silly question... I just really don't want to take any unnecessary risks...🙂

Honestly, if you aren't entirely sure what you're doing, it's probably best to just reset everything back to the factory defaults. That particular processor could actually handle pushing past 3600MHz 24/7 if you knew exactly how to tweak things properly... 🙂

But look, if you don't actually feel like you need that extra processing power right now, then just set it back to 2.66GHz and call it a day...😉

Hmm... I mean, am I even going to see a real performance boost at this frequency? Is it even worth the trouble?

I bumped up the clock speed and the voltage slightly (from 1.225v to 1.237), so nothing crazy... that's pretty much all I did.

I bumped up both the frequency and the voltage—just a tiny bit, moving from 1.225v to 1.237v—so nothing too extreme. That’s really all I’ve done so far.

But tell me, do you actually notice any stuttering or slowdowns in your specific apps or games?
If you aren't seeing a real difference, why bother messing around with overclocking at all?

At the end of the day, you'll see for yourself if there's a measurable jump in performance. If it's actually noticeable (though I have my doubts), then sure, stay at 3GHz. But honestly, is there really a need to push for 3GHz? 2.66GHz is more than enough for most tasks...

Saving a mere 1.5 seconds on a Super Pi run just isn't going to make a difference in your daily usage...

Seems weird that you'd need to bump up the voltage just to hit 3GHz...
Daniel Nguyen3, if you run SuperPI for 1.5s faster, you're gonna be 1.5cm longer...😉
Everyone knows that already...
