There are plenty more out there, but I’m not gonna speak for them. We have enough people here to actually get a conversation going, but all these "newcomers" (not that I have an issue with anyone) just shut down immediately instead of jumping in. It totally kills the vibe 🤮

p.s. I lied about the off-topic thing. At least we're talking, if nothing else 🙂

We won't be off-topic if we write like this:

We won't be Robert De Niro being Robert off-topic if we write Robert in the next De Niro way.

De Niro is everything, really, except for being a one-note actor, and even though I mentioned on another thread here that De Niro just pulls the same expression over and over—you have to realize I was saying that specifically when comparing him to another legend, Pacina—but that was far from my actual, honest opinion of the man...

Robert De Niro is a powerhouse ☕

If you want proof, just look at his career, which is basically a string of hits with almost zero misses (if we aren't counting those recent 😉), playing such an incredible range of characters, and honestly, it’s not even his fault that people mostly just want to see De Niro as some gritty tough guy, because he actually took those exact types of roles and turned them into cinematic perfection.

The movies where he absolutely crushed it:
-Raging Bull 🙏
-The Deer Hunter 🙏
-Awakening (happened to watch it ten years ago and it really stuck 😲 )
-rt fear 😠
-Jackie Brown 😂

In my eyes, his last truly great performance was in
City by the Sea
Even if the movie itself isn't anything special... actually, it's kind of bad, and I felt like De Niro's acting was totally unrecognizable compared to everything he had done up to that point.
Oh, and I just can't stand 😁
Quote: Long Beach. A coastal city... When I was a kid, everything felt so fresh...
...now it looks like a war zone passed through here.

And finally, my absolute favorite scene of his:

It’s honestly tragic how this sub is filled with people who just want to suck up to a few big names 🙏 and call it a day. Real conversation and actual debate seem to bore them to death. That's why this thread is dying, and frankly, it's the same story with every other thread on this board. It's pretty pathetic...

A handful of people actually contribute something, while the rest—who unfortunately make up the majority—are just typing for the sake of typing... 🤮

If discussion is nothing more than airing personal opinions and stances, then where does objectivity fit in? What happened to just presenting facts regardless of how you feel about them? There are plenty of factors involved that have absolutely nothing to do with personal bias or opinion 😉

I honestly think this forum works because it’s all about subjective takes (which is exactly why I’m here). If I wanted to hear from some stuffy expert or a professional critic, I’d just head over to those specialized review sites. What I actually care about is what you guys think—the perspective of the everyday viewer... not some guy who makes his entire living writing reviews for a living.

Look, before this thread turns into a total clusterfuck, I’m gonna back off here... I think I’m being fair, since we all show up to places like this with different agendas and priorities anyway... So, my bad if I stepped on any toes or messed with the vibe of the old-timers around here... 👍

And what kind of "proof" is that? You're just taking compliments and repackaging them as facts...

Who even decides what counts as a flop anyway?

I agree he was killer in most of those roles, except maybe Awakening since I haven't seen it, and rt fear because I didn't think he was that great there, nor was the movie itself. At the end of the day, it's just a difference of opinion...

Personally, all those roles look solid to me, but they feel kind of repetitive, which I've already mentioned a few times...

You misread the situation. There aren't any "old-timers" here, just people. If someone's been posting for one, two, or three years and gets annoyed that new people are showing up, they can go ahead and deal with it. I'm not interested in that drama. I'm just saying most of the newer crowd (not naming names) doesn't really care about actually talking, which sucks for the vibe of this place. It's a shame. Not saying I'm perfect—I used to just post lists and emojis too—but I got tired of it. I'd much rather actually chat, swap info, and have some fun than just spamming the same stuff over and over with zero payoff...

De Niro is absolutely magnetic in Cape Fear. He also proved he can pull off a "tough guy" persona just as easily as a muscleman.

Oh, please, don't try to tell me that you can't objectively label certain movies as failures while others are just decent... don't overstate things like that—you claim you want a high-quality debate, yet here you are trying to deny the fact that De Niro has put out about 80% solid films, a good portion of which are objectively among the top 30% of masterpieces in the entire American film industry.

Ah! You mean this? 🙏 🙏 🙏 Exactly. That’s my take on De Niro.😬

On a more serious note... I truly believe he is a phenomenal actor and one of the greatest American actors of all time. Personally, my favorite is The Deer Hunter, though I wouldn't say he lacks the ability to completely transform himself for a role. In fact, I just watched Awakening from 1990 tonight; his portrayal of a patient suffering from catatonia is incredible. The film is based on a true story. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it. He stars alongside Robin Williams. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Awakenings

I also enjoyed his horror work in Angel Heart http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angel_Heart from 1987, featuring a great Mickey Rourke. In that one, De Niro plays the devil, setting tasks for Rourke. It’s steeped in mysticism and remains one of the best horror films in my book. Definitely worth a watch if you missed it. Those are some of his lesser-known roles. And, of course, I have to mention the brilliant Martin Scorsese film from 1990, Goodfellas, starring De Niro. 🙏

All the other films you mentioned are excellent as well.

Speaking of De Niro, I always think of that song by Banana Republic—bananara - Robert De Niro's Waiting (Lyrics). Here are the full lyrics for him: bananara - Robert De Niro's Waiting (Lyrics)

Hope's dashed to the floor like shattered teenage dreams.
Boys living next door are never what they seem.
A walk in the park can become a bad dream

People are staring and following me.
This is my only escape from it all:
Watching a film or a face on the wall.
Robert De Niro's waiting
talking italian.
Robert De Niro's waiting
talking italian.
Robert De Niro's waiting
talking italian.
Robert De Niro's waiting
talking italian.
I don't need a boy
I've a got a man of steel

don't Come Any closer i don't wanna Feel

You're breathing
you're touching
but nothing's for free

I never want this to happen to me.
Don't try to change me
you're wasting your time

Now I've got something much better in mind.

muttering in Italian...
A simple stroll through the park can turn into a nightmare

Here is a small bit of trivia regarding that legendary line from : "You talkin' to me?". It turns out De Niro actually improvised the dialogue himself. The original script was far more sparse, offering nothing more than a stage direction: "(Travis looks into the mirror)." In this case, Travis Bickle is played by De Niro. That single moment turned him into an overnight icon and gave us one of the most famous lines in cinematic history. It holds the number 10 spot on this list🙏

Whoa, slow down there, buddy... you're getting a little ahead of yourself. 🙂
De Niro is absolutely brilliant in that mediocre film, much like the character he plays is brilliant... A total psychopath, just plain crazy. It was a well-deserved nomination, and ultimately his last one.

80% objective?! Since when is your opinion objective and mine isn't? At the end of the day, whatever you or I think is subjective, not objective, so...

p.s. I'm not denying anything. I already said plenty of De Niro's films (the ones that made him famous) are great or even masterpieces, but that's just my take, just like everything you wrote above is just your take. End of story. I don't know how "objective" anyone can actually be when talking about movies... 😕

I don't know. I'm just saying how I saw the film, and neither the movie nor De Niro did anything for me. I didn't feel that psychopathic vibe from his character at all. It all felt a bit "shallow" to me, and what am I supposed to do? Force myself to feel what you felt? 😵 Seriously. 🙂

It seems like you can't even post here unless you believe De Niro is some god-tier actor who turned out 80% masterpieces 🤮

Robert De Niro is just an incredible actor... I honestly can't recall a single movie where he looked like he was just going through the motions—it’s like he never phoned it in.
He has this uncanny ability to completely reinvent himself whenever a role calls for it. Take "Raging Bull," for instance—he goes from this ripped, muscular boxer at the start (he actually stepped into the ring for some real matches to prep, which is wild) to being totally unrecognizable by the end.
It’s honestly a shame that an actor of his caliber doesn't get cast nearly as often as he deserves... I guess that kind of raw talent just isn't "in" anymore.

You really need to read more carefully, because nobody actually said that... and honestly, I'm pretty sure nobody cares what your take on De Niro is... think whatever you want, I just don't see what kind of conversation you're even hoping to have here 🤷

Man, I just love Robert De Niro's facial expressions and that whole mobster vibe he pulls off so well.
But honestly, Taxi Driver is the one that really sticks with me... seeing one guy take on the whole world to get his own version of justice... it hits different.
Hey guys, let's keep this a discussion and not a fight! Pretty sure I'm the only teenager here... I'm only 16, as far as I can tell...div>

You can't go wrong with a Robert De Niro movie. Seriously. People who say otherwise clearly just watched them without paying attention... total blank stares... If you actually want to see how incredible his range is, you gotta binge more of his stuff before judging...

They actually already have. 😁😁😁 It's called "Righteous Kill," where Al Pacino and Robert De Niro play detectives—partners investigating a murder case. From what I hear, De Niro is playing a somewhat neurotic, loud character this time around, while Al Pacino plays the cooler, tougher guy. 😁

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1034331/

According to some sources, it’s hitting theaters in Spring 2008, though others are saying Fall 2008.
I am incredibly curious to see how this turns out. Based on the chatter I've seen on the IMDb forums, I'm a bit skeptical, but I refuse to bash the film before I've actually sat down to watch it. 🙂

As for Robert De Niro himself, he is an exceptional actor with a massive catalog of legendary roles, though unfortunately, over the last decade or so, he’s been stuck in a rut by picking subpar projects... While he remains one of my absolute favorite actors, I have to admit that Al Pacino holds a slight edge for me. 🙂

De Niro's definitive masterpiece is undoubtedly his portrayal of Mike Vronsky in the brilliant The Deer Hunter. He was also nothing short of phenomenal in Goodfellas, Raging Bull, Casino, Taxi Driver, Once Upon a Time in America, Heat, and The Godfather Part II...
However, he was quite disappointing and fell short in Hide and Seek, Meet the Parents / Meet the Fockers, Showtime, and 15 Minutes...

I sincerely hope he can pull himself out of this slump and finally get back on track...

De Niro is past his prime. We went from a total perfectionist—someone who would actually learn the saxophone if the role required it, pack on 30 pounds, or bulk up into a powerhouse—to a guy whose peak dramatic performance is just a subtle head shake, eyes glued to the ceiling, and an awkward beard.

Even though he used to carry massive films, lately he seems to be picking nothing but garbage. And it'll probably stay that way. He’s 64 now, and let's be real, he was never really a "character actor" to begin with. His only options left are parodying the very roles that made him famous or trying to pivot into heavy drama, which isn't working particularly well. Regardless, he remains one of my favorite actors.
