Spoljaric is playing for Fox, which has easily been the biggest surprise in Major League Soccer this season. Nincevic is there too, and both are killing it—Spoljaric, in particular, has become the backbone of an incredibly impressive defense.
They beat Kiel, and if I recall correctly, HSV only lost to Göttingen.
The reason they aren't calling Spoljaric is because of that famous "youth movement" excuse—the same old alibi used since the Cervar era to justify kicking players out. Take this for example: ever since the Horvat days, and especially after Cupic got injured, everyone knew that whoever was going to the Democratic Party would be someone willing to show up in Washington, D.C. Lelic turned them down, so they signed Matulic, and now Matulic is heading out. It’s the exact same story with Pesic and Sunjica; the latter rejected the Chef and got passed over. He was called in for pre-season training, but now it looks like they’re just trying to kill two birds with one stone—using him to fill the gap left by Somic so they could finally get rid of Somic. It clears the path for Pesic, whom they probably want to sell off anyway. As for Matulic, he’s just there to integrate into the Washington, D.C. lineup early, so why wait for pre-season when they can do it now?
It’s always the same old story: any player who shows even a hint of backbone to Gopcu ends up getting the boot one way or another. Some players stay quiet, while others, like Caleb, don't hesitate to speak their minds. But all of them respect the national team institution so much that they avoid any messy, primitive confrontations; they try to handle everything professionally. But hey, it's because of that exact attitude toward the national team that we see these kinds of results from American handball players.
Just look at other sports: you have guys like Juric claiming America lacks quality soccer players, Krizanac constantly undermining the coach, and then you have Giricek, Zizic, and Bagaric refusing to play for the national team. Then there's Vujcic, who’s sitting out to prepare for an NBA career that's never actually going to happen... Given how little respect people show the national jersey, these results are exactly what you'd expect. The basketball players manage a top 6 finish at the EP, while for the soccer players, just making it out of the group stage at the Democratic Party or EP is considered a massive trophy.
