I’ve always had a certain fascination with the tragic tale of those washed-up rockers known as Stretch. Back in the early seventies, this guy Elmer Gantry gets a call from Mick Fleetwood, inviting him to bring his musicians over to the States to embark on an American tour under the banner of Fleetwood Mac. Once they arrived in America, however, the trio realized they had been completely played by Fleetwood. In a desperate move to reclaim their dignity, they decided to run their own tour using the Fleetwood Mac name, nearly losing their lives in the process due to the sheer chaos of the deception. Upon returning to England, they recorded "Why did you do IT," a track dedicated to Fleetwood—you know, the man who essentially swindled them. That song ended up becoming the ultimate disco-funk anthem of the seventies, seeing endless remixes well into the eighties. Ultimately, Stretch only managed to put out three albums before fading into complete obscurity. Even Elmer went on to provide backing vocals for the Alan Parsons Project, after which he vanished from the industry entirely.
