Ryan Adams

I’ve been scrolling through everything here and I honestly can't believe nobody has brought up Ryan Adams yet. His melodies are just gorgeous, and the songwriting is so raw and smart. Even at just 29, he’s already masterfully jumped through basically every genre you can think of.

You really shouldn't sleep on him, because I guess we might be looking at the most powerful songwriter since Bob Dylan first showed up.

Honestly, I liked him way better back when he actually had a girlfriend. Ever since she dumped him, he’s been walking around acting like some massive rockstar. I mean, maybe he is one, but his stuff just isn't hitting the mark lately.

Man, he actually broke up with his girlfriend—which is why that first album is ironically titled "Heartbreaker"—and honestly, pretty much all of his solo stuff came out after they split up. Before that, he was playing with Whiskeytown!

We actually touched on that rock n roll album in some other thread (can't remember which one), but honestly, it just doesn't hold up at all. Pretty disappointing, if you ask me.

Ryan Adams is a bigger opportunist than Thompson... 😱 If those two planes hadn't hit the World Trade Center, his career wouldn't even be a thing—I mean, what kind of luck do you need to film a music video featuring lyrics about still loving New York City while the Minnesota Twins are in the background, just days before everything went up in flames? 🙄

...I wasn't ever huge on Whiskeytown (Springsteen + U2), though they did manage to land an occasional gem (like Ashes of The American Flags—I wonder if anyone still spins that one 🙄 ) ... As for Ryan Adams' solo stuff, it’s honestly forgettable...

I honestly think a lot of Bryan Adams fans would be pretty insulted if they actually stumbled across this thread...🙄

Anyways, when it comes to Ryan, he’s definitely got some gems in his catalog... but you really have to be in just the right headspace to appreciate them...
Personally, I’ve always gravitated more toward his take on that bon Voxa & The Corrsa track, "When The Stars go Blue"...
"call me on Your Way home" is alright, I guess... and then there's "Carolina" or whatever else is out there...

I still can't get over that story about those idiots at his show, thinking they were actually at a Bryan Adams concert and screaming for "Summer of '69"... apparently, he just stopped the whole set right there and kicked them out...😂 🤣

Nope—the guy was asking for "Run to You" just to mess with him... Ryan ended up kicking him out, and his security team refunded his ticket money

Oh well... I wasn't actually there, so who knows—maybe things would have gone differently... 🙂

I'm not entirely sure about the specifics anymore... but I remember reading somewhere that he just lost it and tossed them out... and then his agent gave them their money back the next day...

But then again... who knows? 🙂
The main thing is we can all agree he's a bit unstable...

Oh, for sure.

I was just trying to say that to me, Whiskeytown 👍 hits just like Heartbreaker 👍 did, but then everything just got more and more boring—I'm talking about Demolition and rock n roll—though I will admit Love Is Hell Pt. 1 has a few decent moments.

Geez, so nobody actually likes it? Look, mark my words—Gold is an absolute masterpiece, just freaking gorgeous. I wasn't exactly feeling Heartbreaker that much, and Demolition is honestly just a mediocre collection of demos (I mean, who’s even buying that? 🙂), and I haven't even touched the new stuff yet. Joshua Ross792, are these actually any good?

I think Ryan Adams' Gold is a masterpiece (definitely peaks with Just Smiled). Demolition was kind of a letdown though, and honestly, he's been coasting at that same mediocre pace ever since (sadly). It feels a bit too much like that U2-inspired rock n roll vibe from So Alive. yuuuuuuuck.

I don't know, maybe rock n roll isn't really their thing, but "so alive" and "anybody wanna take me home" are honestly great tracks. The first one kind of gives off those Springsteen + U2 vibes, and the second reminds me of The Smiths, but hey, that's just how he rolls. I haven't managed to get my hands on Love is hell pt. 1 yet—it's impossible to find, they already sold out of the first shipment. Has anyone actually heard Love is hell?

I found Heartbreaker to be an absolutely stellar album (along with a few others). I actually picked it up at the same time as Jim White’s Wrong Eyed Jesus, and I must say, I spent weeks listening to nothing but those two on repeat.

Maybe Gold is alright, and Demolition has its merits. As for rock and roll—did I actually listen to it? I suppose I don't know; it feels like I've just grown indifferent to it all.

I suppose there is something rather haunting about the way Whiskeytown handles those themes... perhaps it's just me, but the connection between Strangers Almanac and that sense of illness feels quite profound.
