I have absolutely no intention of adding fuel to the fire here. It’s just 😘 - Kenneth Hernandez67, and honestly, it wouldn't have mattered anyway. You're just looking for a fight—you know you are. Don't waste your energy on something so utterly trivial 😉

👍
Honestly, we all lose our minds eventually when we run into those absolute morons who suddenly think they're hot stuff just because they have a shred of authority. I nearly went scorched earth yesterday on this total monster who had the nerve to bark at me just because I asked to switch my primary care physician... Seriously. Dealing with idiots is basically just part of the American experience.
It honestly breaks my heart that he’s struggling so much right now 😢
But I truly believe there's some comfort in knowing someone is actually standing by him, which makes things a little more bearable, especially during those moments when he's feeling particularly vulnerable. That really does mean everything. There are plenty of people out there who aren't dealing with such severe struggles and will never truly understand what that feels like. You're doing an incredible job. 😘

Honestly, I think the best thing you can do for him is just show some patience regarding his irritability. It felt absolutely miserable for the first three days, but things smoothed out after that.
But look, let’s be real—even a year later, I still find myself dreaming about cigarettes.😳
Man... I really hope he pulls through. As for me, I’ve got nothing to offer here besides watching everyone else struggle through their own misery.😢
😢 I know there isn’t much I can actually do, but it’s honestly gut-wrenching to watch him suffer like this. I’ve tried everything—I’d whip up gourmet French pastries for him, try to give him a daily massage (though he was so high-strung he wouldn't even let me touch him 😢), sing 😈 (yeah, my sense of humor is pretty dark, I know), or just let him lead the way wherever his heart desires...
But he won't have any of it. He's just suffering full-time 😢
I smoked for about six months and dealt with a minor little withdrawal phase when I quit, but honestly, it wasn't some massive ordeal for me, so I can't claim to truly grasp what the lifelong smokers are going through. I actually read through the entire quitting thread word for word and picked up a few things I hadn't considered before, so kudos to all the absolute legends out there who have successfully kicked the habit 👍
My partner is a serious addict (or was, hopefully just was 🙂) who smokes heavy cigarettes, smokes them constantly, and has been at it for ages, but he’s finally decided to quit.
It’s only day one and he’s already on edge, telling me he can’t stop thinking about smoking. So now I’m turning to you guys—the people who actually made it out—how am I supposed to help him? He isn't really good at communicating his needs; I can see he's fighting this internal battle alone because he thinks he has to white-knuckle it by himself.
I get that he has to do the work, obviously, but what should I actually expect from him, and does anyone have any real ideas on how to make this easier on him? Thanks!!!

So, who exactly did you decide to fixate on just so you could spend all your time hunting down Henry Wilson48?
I honestly don't get the whole multi-level marketing thing; I tend to speak my mind plainly, and beyond that, I have my own views. It’s perfectly obvious to me that she isn't a fan. 😢 🙂
xxGaladrielxx said:Henry Wilson48, give me a break! You’re already acting like we’ve been married for a decade! What kind of crazy meditation routine are you supposed to pull off while your husband is passed out next to you? Seriously? And you have to go hunting for stuff online just to get started 😲 If you want some actual deep relaxation, just hop on your big lion 👍 😁
A little bit of everything, really. 😳
But honestly, I’ve realized that since I started meditating like this, I’m actually way more neurotic and anxious than I ever gave myself credit for. Hopefully, all this practice will finally help settle my brain down 😢 🙂
Look, folks, you really don't have to stress yourselves out over nothing... just kick off your morning with some basic yoga stretches and settle down with about 15 minutes of meditation... and honestly, the whole day just feels better.
I know plenty of people who meditate; but I’m just way too restless (especially first thing in the morning) to actually relax on command; I end up rushing through everything and I’m still stuck in limbo. If I stick to a routine for a few months, I eventually mellow out, but right now—after taking a break and dealing with all the chaos lately—there is absolutely no way I can pull that off on my own.
Honestly, it’s nothing groundbreaking; but since it only takes 15 minutes and requires zero effort, I’d say it’s actually worth it... I can't stand those useless routines where you have to flip your entire schedule upside down just to squeeze them in.
Also—now that I've started doing Pilates at home—I went ahead and picked up that "Pilates Body" book 👍
and paired it with some Pilates music from Solitude (that label that does the nature sounds and ambient tracks—you can find their stuff in any local record store) along with some Zen Yoga tracks.
I'm basically a total newbie.
Disclaimer: Since I started this, I've become way more aware of the specific issues that make me want to absolutely lose my mind at work; I can't just blissfully ignore my problems as easily anymore, but hey, it's a step in the right direction, right?😉
So, I recently got laid off—I actually started a whole separate thread about that on this forum—and I was desperately searching for something to take the edge off, whether that meant pills or meditation. Eventually, I stumbled upon this deep relaxation meditation online. It’s basically just some light ambient music paired with a guide who walks you through breathing exercises and progressive muscle relaxation. There isn't any heavy spiritual philosophy involved; I’ve dabbled in similar stuff before, usually doing my own thing or following along with a Yoga Nidra session...
But man, this is a game-changer. You can always squeeze in 15 minutes, whereas finding a solid 45 minutes for Yoga Nidra can be a real struggle when life gets busy. The guy's voice is incredibly soothing, and the soundtrack is beautiful...
Since then, I've made it a point to meditate every single morning before I even get out of bed. Now, instead of just mindlessly scrolling through my phone by the window or zoning out in front of the TV or laptop, I use that time for this, plus some Pilates and some morning stretches. Starting the day with this level of calm is a total shift from my old habit of just stumbling around the apartment like a zombie. Honestly, jumping straight out of bed the second the alarm goes off felt way too jarring for me, so this gives me a chance to collect myself, decompress, and actually stand up feeling composed and ready to tackle the day.
Sandra Moore said:I basically manufactured all that tension myself, realized just how much I messed up, and escalated things by three or four levels of pure chaos... and honestly, just like I suspected—I’m already regretting it...
I regret even bothering to stir the pot in the first place, but then again, I couldn't help myself... I guess I'm just a total mess.😕
I basically manufactured my own drama, realized way too much, and managed to spiral about three or four levels deep into making a complete mess of things... and just like I suspected—I’m already regretting it.
But honestly, I couldn't help myself; I just had to vent and point fingers at everyone responsible.
My poor boyfriend spent days listening to me spiral; it practically became his daily routine once he got home from work: just checking in on how my day went 😬
It's clear to me now that relationships in that environment are absolutely toxic and must be miserable; I really need to build up some kind of mental shield, even though doing that at a high-pressure job like mine is incredibly difficult...
Lisa Ortiz17 said:Helex 0.5 is basically nothing, honey. 🙂 If you’ve never messed with stuff like this before, it’s going to feel totally surreal. You know those weird knots you get in your stomach? They just vanish, leaving your brain feeling crystal clear. I actually find myself reaching for it occasionally when I have a big exam coming up or if I have to give a presentation to a massive audience... Honestly, you sound so relaxed right now that you might actually start enjoying the sound of your own voice. 😁
electricdriver78 said:Oh, Sandra Moore—I totally get it now.
My sister works as a TA at her university and she’s dealing with the exact same nonsense you are; she either has to sit there and swallow all the bullshit and those unwritten "rules," constantly walking on eggshells so she doesn't step on any of the "senior faculty's" toes, or she just snaps and tells them off regardless of the fallout.
That other option isn't even really an option for her because she's still stuck in her doctoral coursework, so she can't just walk away—her fellowship covers a massive tuition bill, and if she quits, she’d have to foot the entire difference herself, plus she’s almost finished and just wants to get it over with.
The bottom line: she’s been fighting this battle for three years now, and just two weeks ago, she had a horrific ulcer flare-up where both ulcers at the junction of her stomach and small intestine opened up and triggered severe gastritis (or some variation of that diagnosis).
Sometimes I honestly feel like driving down to that campus and just slapping every single one of them—what absolute morons.😠
😢 😢 😢
Margie, I am so incredibly sorry to hear about what your sister is going through.😢 😘
To hell with them; it’s enough to make a person physically sick just witnessing that level of stupidity...
I'm lucky enough that my own colleagues are too clueless and incompetent to be truly dangerous, but I know exactly how it feels when your stomach is churning and your head is pounding so hard that you can barely lie in bed at night.
Honestly, this thread and the fact that I finally let my frustrations out publicly has helped me more than I can say; I was sitting through a nauseating board meeting today and it suddenly hit me how many miles I've actually put between myself and all that toxicity.
I didn't push back or make a scene when I was in the thick of it, not even when I was the main subject of the drama. I didn't get angry. Nothing. I just realized that nothing ever actually changes. And then, the second I walked away from it all, these incredible scientific opportunities appeared out of nowhere—wonderful people willing to help me and alternative sources of funding and research grants just started flowing in. God bless their souls.
But I had to go through that painful diagnostic process first... it wasn't pretty or elegant—more like a psychological gastrointestinal exam... but now I know exactly where I stand. I see now that there was no other way it could have happened...
It’s a bitter realization to come to... people can be absolutely terrible...
Lisa Ortiz17 said:Sandra Moore, look, I know you're stuck in academia—that same academic grind I bailed on after five or six years because there's absolutely no way I’d ever find myself back in that environment. The hypocrisy and that fake sense of camaraderie are just baked into the culture there; you basically have to master the art of flattery and play the part of the wide-eyed ingenue just to maintain some semblance of peace of mind. You can manipulate the situation exactly the way I suggested, because let's be honest: the whole evaluation system isn't actually built on the quality of your research or your actual worth as a professional, but rather on how much you're willing to bow down and make yourself indispensable to your superiors. It sounds counterintuitive, but the more you act like you can't function independently—and I mean specifically by leaning on your professor to stroke their ego—the more valued you'll become. I realize how soul-crushing that is for a young person, especially when it forces this kind of mental lethargy upon you, where you can't even afford to be efficient or quick at your daily tasks because being too competent actually works against you. Every time you succeed on your own merit, it serves as a silent indictment of their own incompetence and irrelevance, and that's a dangerous game to play since a university is defined by its professors, not by the junior faculty or TAs. And for heaven's sake, keep your private life completely separate from everything else, mostly because there's so much idle time and constant "socializing" going on. This endless cycle of pretending to be clueless while simultaneously trying to handle high-stakes work that requires actual initiative and resourcefulness is absolutely exhausting, and it will stay that way until you finally land a tenure-track position. Most people, once they climb that ladder, completely forget where they started, and by the time they become the very "oppressors" they once hated, they don't even realize they've changed; they just hold the title and all the baggage that comes with it.
When the definitive anthology of this forum is eventually written, I’m going to fight to make sure this post is included; it probably won't be necessary, but if the time comes, I'll be ready.
Gal, 🙏 massive respect to you!!!
Everything you wrote hits the nail on the head; I honestly couldn't add a single thing...
The situation here is a little unique because we’re talking about university life; in that world, your graduation year and your official status carry way more weight than all the actual intelligence, talent, or expertise in the entire world...
For two days straight now (since things are shifting around in such a major way over there and everything feels totally unstable and shaky...), I’ve been dealing with a splitting headache every single night.
Honestly, I'm just getting worked up. I feel this massive urge to go into tomorrow's meeting and just lay it all out there; to tell them that I’m going strictly by what’s been officially stated, that I won't be entertaining any of those shady behind-the-scenes dealings, and that I expect someone to look me in the eye and say exactly what the deal is, loud and clear...
I want to say what I think is right, and if they can accommodate it, fine, but if not, then fine...
I can't let this go without saying something... maybe that's the whole point of these endless, dragging forum debates—but is that actually okay? What kind of satisfaction am I supposed to get from abandoning healthy hypocrisy just to avoid stirring up ideological waters?
I don't get it at all...
btw... Margie, Violent... thanks... you both have every right to feel the way you do about every single word you said, but the situation here is just shitty... I have a very strong reason to stick it out here for a while longer... and there's nobody above the boss... well, technically there is, but who actually cares...
Gal - how can you claim to show someone dominance while simultaneously manipulating them? Doesn't manipulation essentially mean flattering someone or rocking them into a false sense of security?
