is anyone selling one?

The one currently listed in the ads? It's way overpriced....

Chris Miller6 said:Woohoo! It’s about time someone brought up sailing 🙂
Right now, the only sailing I'm seeing is at the boat show in Miami, haha
but hopefully, I'll be out on the water in my own boat soon...

What kind of boat? 🙂

Have all the sailors passed away, or is everyone just out on the water right now? 🙂

You can still submit a short story for our "how I got into sailing" contest over on the blog:

Emily Newman77 said:Yeah, tell me about it. I did a quick Google search, but I couldn't find any sailing schools for "older" folks in Seattle or even anywhere nearby...

First off, the local community center only takes kids up to 14; nobody else seems interested.
Second, those agency-run programs don't really do much for me.
Third, I highly doubt some seasoned sailor is just going to grab a total rookie on board and start coaching them on the fly.

But whatever, it is what it is. 🙂

For beginners, there are actually two solid paths you can take:
- If small dinghy courses aren't available, there are plenty of beginner classes for keelboats—for instance, check out the programs at the local yacht club near the Great Lakes. It’s absolutely worth investing in a week-long intensive course; you'll hammer home the essential fundamentals.
- Or, sign up for a course using Lasers in Chicago over at Central Park (www.ycz.hr). Unfortunately, that's currently the only club in the US offering that specifically for adults. 😢

Once you've done that, you should be able to join a crew as a novice and learn the ropes on the job...

Alternatively, you could just pick up a used small sailboat and practice on your own!

Yesterday, I spent some time sailing and swimming at Central Park 🙂

feralmarlin132 said:There should be some left—I spent my cash on my own Laser, though I'll admit it's seen better days. You could always check if they’re still selling MTA passes at the club for cheap...

Do you know if anyone at the club has an extra Laser case lying around? Even an older model would work.

I don't care about the MTA; I want Europe. 🙂
There are still two MTA passes at the club, but only one is actually set up for use.

As for the cases, even the ones for the current Lasers are missing or in terrible shape.😢

feralmarlin132 said:What are you planning to use it for? If it’s just for recreation, the yacht club over by Central Park had some older boats, and there were some Europas around too, if I remember correctly. I can send you a contact if you're interested.

I know, I know—it's actually that Europa at the club near Central Park they want to fix up. It's basically a bare hull right now; it lacks almost all the gear, and honestly, I'm not even sure if the mast is still around somewhere.
The goal is to get it fully rigged so the girls can actually go out sailing.

Otherwise, I might look into picking up an older Europa myself, maybe spending a max of $500 to haul it down to the coast.

Does anyone happen to have any used gear for Europe, or perhaps an entire vessel available for sale?

Emily Newman77 said:Hey everyone, I’ve got absolutely zero experience here...

I was wondering if it's actually possible to join a sailing club as a total beginner with the goal of getting into competitive racing? Like, you know, enrolling in a school, training, all that stuff.

Just so you know, I'm a little over 14 years old.😢

Small glider or keelboats?

casualbear3 said:Awesome!!! When are you going to pick out the next boat for this series? Also, what’s your take on the Boeing 747, considering how I plan to use it...

The Catalina 14 is a really charming little boat that actually handles quite well given its size. If you find one that's been well-maintained, it makes for a great little cruiser for two people during a summer vacation, or maybe four if you're just looking to mess around a bit.

Unfortunately, you don't see many of these small sailboats at racing events anymore, so finding a group to sail with won't be easy. 😢

I haven't personally taken an Amazon out on the water, but it looks like a solid choice for cruising.

casualbear3 said:When it comes to racing, I'm really just an Uskok guy (I'm from San Francisco); I know for a fact I won't be heading down to San Diego or Santa Barbara for regattas—I simply don't have the time or a crew. What I'm looking for is a boat to hop out to the nearby islands in the summer, or maybe head out with some friends in the fall and spring just to soak up the vibes. I owned a FedEx about five years ago, but I ended up selling it after two years because the engine was a total nightmare and constantly breaking down. Now, I'm thinking of getting something smaller so I can slip out on my own or just with one buddy. That’s why I was eyeing an Elan 19 or maybe just a small 5-6hp dinghy... however, there isn't a single one listed online right now. So, I've been looking at Microtoneres lately (even though they aren't exactly my style), and I've even checked out some Amon 790s with a 10hp diesel installed. They're sitting around $8,500 to $10,000. Sure, the Amon is bigger and heavier, and I won't be able to handle it solo, but... who knows, I'm no expert...

Check out this blog:

It might give you some inspiration. 🙂

casualbear3 said:I’m looking to drop about $6,500 on a boat. I’ve heard the Elan 19 is a solid choice for sailing, but does anything else similar hit that price point? Also, what’s the deal with the Microtonere-micropomo—is that actually the same thing?

What’s the actual endgame here? Are you planning to get into racing, just cruising around the coast, or are you strictly looking to learn the ropes? And more importantly, who are you planning on sailing with?

Samuel Bennett2 said:What were they sailing on? I was right there and didn't see a thing.

It was Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4 PM, right in front of Uskok. There were two 505s and a 470 out there, plus some kids in Optimists.

Anything new to report? Is everyone getting their sailboats ready for the season, or is everyone still obsessed with skiing?

We were out sailing in San Diego this weekend.🙂

Brandon Mitchell6 said:If anyone has questions regarding the Meta class, please don't hesitate to reach out. It hit the water for its maiden voyage about a month ago near Santa Barbara, and we've managed to push it to about 18.5 miles so far. We truly believe it can hit the 25-mile mark :-). Best wishes to everyone, especially our resident hellcat and the rest of the crew :-))

That’s an incredible boat you have there. I am counting down the days until my week in Santa Barbara... I might just lose my mind from all the excitement! 🙂

Jose Murphy3 said:While we're on the subject of rigging, I have a question. From what I understand, adjusting the rig should really be done while the boat is actually underway. However, everyone who has helped me trim the rig on my vessel insists they have enough experience to handle it right there in the marina—and they claim that for us weekend sailors, precise trimming isn't even necessary since it's mostly just a concern for serious racing crews. Does anyone here have any actual experience or insight regarding this?

Well, for those of us out sailing on the weekends, knowing if we'll pull into the slip by 6:00 PM or 9:00 PM is definitely important enough.🙂

It’s truly disheartening to see how many of our sailing discussions have just sort of fizzled out and died over time 😢

When you start looking into gear—especially for smaller vessels—it feels like you still have to physically head out to a local shop to find what you need 😢
How many miles is the loop around Central Park? in Other Sports ·
What’s your typical time for a quick loop around Central Park on rollerblades?

I picked up the pace a bit yesterday—hit 19 minutes for the first lap and shaved it down to 18 for the second...
