I’m looking for anyone who has (unfortunately) gone through cervical disc herniation surgery to share their experiences here.
Which neurosurgeon in Washington, D.C. is considered the absolute best in this field?

Stay away from surgery!

I’ve heard yoga can be beneficial too, but did those people also deal with a herniated cervical disc?

I can't seem to find any solid information anywhere. A neurologist mentioned it at a symposium, then another specialist concluded that all my previous scans were essentially useless—that the situation is dire. He suggested I could go through him to see one of the top surgeons in the country, but that might actually make things worse: an irreversible outcome, regardless. 👎(But I would need to trust him implicitly, so maybe there is still a way... 😕)???

After hearing those comments, I felt like I was already becoming disabled. My mind started racing with every worst-case scenario, and I just couldn't settle down. 😢

I just hope things aren't quite as bad as this scare made them out to be.. 😱

He reached that conclusion through palpation because that specific part of the disc is pressing against him. The doctor who performed the EMG says it’s hypoplastic, but he disagrees; he’s demanding a second EMG and arguing that it’s actually hypoatrophic.
I’m a layman, obviously, but from what I’ve read, people deal with these issues for ages—dealing with chronic pain until nerve damage sets in—which is why they aren't rushed into surgery right away.
So, I don't quite follow: how is it possible for me to have such extensive damage from a relatively minor protrusion after only about a month?
Both neurologists are top-tier specialists, and I'm stuck between them. The one I saw yesterday really caught me off guard.

Yeah, it looks like that first neurologist was the one who messed things up. 👎
Yesterday, I saw another neurologist to get a second opinion—mostly so I have some leverage when I finally meet with the neurosurgeon (just in case). This professor basically tore everything apart; he trashed my previous doctors, their procedures, and all my test results, suggesting I redo half of them.
He told me straight up that the damage is extensive. From what he can see, my muscle tissue is essentially ruined, and the whole situation is pretty grim. He recommended physical therapy, though he’s skeptical it’ll actually do much. He knows some top-tier neurosurgeons, but spinal surgery in the neck is incredibly high-stakes. Even if it works, there's a massive risk of failure, and if it goes south, you're looking at paralysis or losing function in your arms. It feels like I'm backed into a corner with no real way out. After the appointment, the nurse had to practically escort me out because I just couldn't pull myself together. 🙄

On the flip side, the doctor I worked with for my EMG told me she didn't think it looked quite that dire. She mentioned that patients usually deal with much more intense pain and insisted I start physical therapy immediately, noting that many people manage to recover that way.

I honestly don't know what to think anymore or who to trust. 😲 I'm bouncing from specialist to specialist, paying through the nose, only to have the diagnosis get progressively worse every couple of days. I'm completely confused.

From what I gather, surgery should be the absolute last resort. Has anyone here dealt specifically with a cervical disc protrusion and potentially surgery? If so, could you share some insight?

Also, is there a real risk that my condition could deteriorate significantly and compromise the success of a future surgery if I decide to try physical therapy first?

Unfortunately, none of us can claim your level of perfection. Thanks for your "contribution" to this thread; I think you've said quite enough. I’m sure the rest of the group is just as eager to hear your expert opinions and suggestions, so enjoy your exit.

Appreciate the advice. 😘 Maybe things aren't quite as bleak as they seemed.

I understand that consistent exercise is the priority here—it’ll take roughly three to four months to see real progress—so I’m looking for someone to design a customized training regimen based on my specific medical reports. I have zero interest in being tossed into a generic group class for ten minutes of mindless repetition.
Can anyone recommend a specialist like that in Chicago? 🙏

On another note, I hear people raving about chiropractors all the time. However, I had an encounter with a NEUROLOGIST who essentially wrenched my neck left and right, and ever since then, everything has gone downhill. It seems this entire situation stems from that one moment. To be honest, the very thought of manual manipulation makes me uneasy. They told me I was lucky to walk away unscathed 👎 (and please, don't mock me; I already live with enough regret regarding that encounter).

Does anyone have experience with the Cybex center in downtown Chicago? Or perhaps Dr. Miller's clinic over on Michigan Avenue?

P.S. If you know any reliable physiotherapists, chiropractors, or similar specialists, please send me a DM.

Well, I'm glad you feel that way.

Regarding Skockicu—you can't judge someone without walking a mile in their shoes, and making comments like that is particularly out of line.
I’d love to see how you’d handle my routine: waking up at 5:00 AM just to make it to work by 7:30, grinding through the workday, dealing with the rush afterward, and then heading out to help on the family farm. Repeat that every single day. By the evening, I’m absolutely exhausted and just counting the minutes until I can hit the pillow.
Unfortunately, part of this was tied to genetic predispositions, something I learned far too late in life.
It’s perfectly clear to me now that more could have been done to prevent this, but at this stage, I'm simply focused on mitigating the damage.
If you can't offer actual help or even a bit of empathy, then don't bother chiming in with that kind of tone. We certainly don't need any more negativity in this situation.
I have no intention of getting into an argument here, but spare us these "well-meaning" remarks.
Thanks.

I spent ten days undergoing physical therapy—magnet therapy, electrical stimulation (which actually made my pain worse), and exercises where they placed me in the wrong group—over at Mayo Clinic. In the meantime, my doctor prescribed another ten sessions at random, but I finally had a thorough consultation with a neurologist. She explicitly forbade any more physical therapy until we have complete results, and she referred me for an MRI, which confirmed a disc protrusion.
The issue is that this neurologist will be out for the next ten days or so, and without her input, it's difficult to make any meaningful moves. I’m hoping for the right kind of physical therapy this time—something tailored specifically to me—so I’m looking for recommendations for a physiatrist that anyone has had success with regarding this specific issue.

My doctor is pushing for an urgent consultation with a neurosurgeon, but I am doing everything in my power to avoid surgery at my age.

All of this is taking a massive toll on my mental state. If anyone has dealt with something similar, please share your experiences. I'm honestly terrified that continuing with these tests and potentially starting new treatments might lead to a setback.

I have a sedentary job, and lately, I haven't been very active or playing much sports, but now the big question is what I'm actually allowed to do.

I’d appreciate hearing from anyone dealing with similar issues. My doctors can't seem to agree on a treatment plan—and frankly, the current approach is making things worse—so I'm at a total loss as to what my next move should be.😕

Hello, everyone.
For those of you who have dealt with cervical spine issues—specifically numbness, radiating arm pain, or herniated discs—how did you actually manage it?

Additionally, I’m looking for a solid recommendation for a physiotherapist in Chicago to help address this.
Thanks.

Hi everyone.
I was wondering if anyone here has experience using Celexa for depression. Does it actually tend to have fewer side effects compared to other antidepressants on the market?

Where is this physiatrist located, and what kind of treatment plan did he suggest? Also, what was the damage to the bank account—roughly how many dollars were we talking about?

I'm looking for recommendations for a solid neurologist here in Los Angeles. Also, if anyone has experience seeing Dr. Maya Angelou, please let me know—feel free to shoot me a DM. Thanks!

I was actually thinking about scheduling a pre-employment screening here in NYC today, but even with private clinics, the wait times are brutal. Honestly, I’ve had some bad experiences in the past, and I'm feeling pretty anxious about potential fallout 👎 so if you wouldn't mind sharing which provider you used, please (feel free to DM me).
It would be such a relief if this were a straightforward process... did you have to undergo any testing beyond just an EEG?

Usually just the fallout from stress.

Is anyone else here dealing with tension headaches? I’m curious about how long they typically last for you and what usually triggers them. Is there any way to actually prevent them, or am I just stuck managing the pain once it hits? Any tips for relief would be appreciated. 😕
Stomach issues - help! in Health ·
It’s a common issue that people often link to bacteria, though more often than not, it's just pure stress. I've found that sticking to lighter meals with minimal seasoning helps—stay away from alcohol, smoking, and anything carbonated. It seems to flare up most during the spring and fall transitions. Initially, Tums works well enough (the peppermint flavor isn't half bad), but if things get more intense, you might need something stronger like Pepcid or Prilosec.

The doctor told me my results look fine and suggested we just check back in a year—what a relief! Still, given the headaches this situation is causing me, I’ll have to deal with it sooner or later regardless. Thank you for the support!
