From what I understand, if your doctor prescribed them and they aren't working for you—like, you actually can't see straight—then they should be prescribing alternatives that don't cost you extra. Or, if the other options are more expensive, you should just be paying the difference.
I've heard about people pulling stuff like that before. I actually had a similar situation with my glasses a few years back.
