Just like I suspected, they basically told me I couldn't do a single thing unless I went through the hassle of activating the card first. The person I was chatting with was absolutely floored—like, genuinely shocked—that companies have actually started pulling this kind of stunt... I mean, seriously? They just cold-mail you a random card that nobody ever asked for, without any signed contracts or anything official, and just hope someone is gullible enough to take the bait. 👎

Plus, there's the other thing—the whole thing was sent to an address that's strictly listed in the official paperwork.

I am seriously, seriously suspicious about someone just sending money to one of my old cards without even giving me a heads-up... I’m not going to activate it because I don't even want the card, but now I'm stuck wondering what the move is. Should I actually reach out to them to figure out what this is about and let them know I didn't ask for this—no offense intended, obviously—or should I just ignore the whole thing? Like, is there even anything I *can* do if I just leave the card inactive?

According to the activation instructions, once I get the PIN (which I did), I'm supposed to go to the website mentioned above and follow some "simple steps" to get it running.

The whole thing just reeks of a scam to me.

So, just a few minutes ago, my dad walks in with two envelopes addressed to him from New York City. He’s looking at them totally confused—he doesn't speak a word of English—so he asked me to translate. Inside the first one, there's a Netspend Visa Prepaid Gift Card with this note saying, "Thank you for applying for a Netspend Visa Prepaid Gift Card. To use your card, you must first activate it..." and so on and so forth. The second envelope has the PIN. I asked Dad if he actually applied for any kind of card, and he was like, "No way." We don't even have a credit card in our house, and honestly, I barely understand how any of this stuff works. It’s not like he could have applied online either, since he can't even figure out how to turn on a computer.

Anyway, I'm completely lost, so I figured I'd start a thread here. 😬Is this some kind of scam or what? (I mean, does this even exist in the world of credit cards?) Because absolutely nobody applied for anything... Should I send them an email and tell them to get lost? Or should I just ignore the whole thing? (Does anything even happen if you don't activate the card?) I genuinely have no idea how to handle this or if I even need to react at all.

Honestly, my favorite part is when that bulging monstrosity basically fries her brain and takes half her head off—but then, of course, her sweet little boyfriend rushes to her side. She suddenly jolts back to life from the dead, just like in every single cliché horror flick ever made, and he gives her this incredibly tender, soothing little look and says, "Don't worry, honey, everything's going to be okay." Oh, sure. Yeah. Like that's actually gonna happen... give me a break.
