Jose Chase2: i blame society 🤷

You’re absolutely right, my friend. You really are.

America is just this modern void, suffocating under clichés, shallow dialogue, and green-eyed starlets. Consumerism wraps everything up in colorful PG-rated cellophane, leaving today's youth completely unable to appreciate actual substance because they've been conditioned to expect nothing but surface-level fluff.

It’s probably best to just live by Martin Quatermass's mantra: I'm a long-term pessimist and a short-term optimist.

Jose Chase2: I haven't actually sat down to watch Big Trouble in Little China yet.

Man, this almost moved me to tears.

What can you even say about that Carpenter guy?

Honestly, thank God he exists. That fascination he has with the Hawks-Ford-Leone style is spot on; without that Western influence, we wouldn't have had the police station attack, the escape from New York City, or Big Trouble in Little China—it sounds crude on the surface, but it's all masterfully woven together. It was also a brilliant move to film The Thing; it gave Cronenberg's obsession with flesh, transformation, and the grotesque a worthy cinematic counterpart. And filming Prince of Darkness was just as smart, because you need a film where the editing and pacing approach perfection every now and then. Plus, having the Vampires around is great, because in their heavily clichéd, black-and-white one-dimensionality, they are actually quite brutal.

And there's plenty more good stuff I won't mention, simply out of politeness.

Oh, and it’s a good thing his old man was a musician.
It’s got to be 'The Wild Bunch' for me!

(And if we're talking about Leone, then 'A Fistful of Dynamite' is the only logical choice.)

Ronald Morales51: Given that it's actually a true story??

🤔 I’m not entirely convinced about that specific detail. You might want to double-check that online. 😉

The whole movie caught me off guard, especially the way they shot it.

It has this dreamy atmosphere, yet somehow feels absolutely chilling. 🙂
Cities as cinematic backdrops in Movies ·
Personally, my absolute favorite is San Francisco. (Think Nob Hill, Russian Hill, Lombard Street, Chinatown, the cable Cars, the Golden Gate Bridge, the Bay Bridge, Alcatraz... the works, plus all those tempting camera angles.)

Some standout examples include Bullitt by Peter Yates, Dirty Harry from Siegelov, and 48 Hours by Hill. Then there’s Fearless by Peter Weir and Sans Soleil by Chris Marker.

You also have Escape from Alcatraz where—following the "less is more" philosophy—even a single shot over the prison walls and the water is enough to satisfy any viewer. And then there's the newer The Rock, where everything (adhering to that "pretty but soulless" template) from the hotel interiors to the panoramic shots is easy on the eyes.

There's always room for a bit of cinematic glitz and glamour too, like that massive 007 vs. Max Zorin showdown atop the Golden Gate in the Bond spectacle A View to a Kill.

To top it all off: if you want the ultimate (!) cinematic experience of a sun-drenched or fog-shrouded San Francisco, go with Hitchcock's Vertigo; for those moody night scenes, you really can't beat Fincher's The Game.

And of course, the exception that proves the rule—that one set of stairs in front of an art museum and the climb that, for me, forever immortalized Philadelphia on film.
Steven Spielberg Film Marathon in Movies ·
Nice, nice. Very much so. It’s an appropriate term, really—perfect for those of us who are crusty old neurotics (and I include myself in that group quite proudly 😬). My only gripe? Four titles at once feels excessive. Aside from my own waning attention span, it’s just too much clutter; there's such a massive jumble here that nothing is likely to actually stick in your memory.

Regardless, if we're talking about my personal favorites—based on mood, atmosphere, and all that jazz—they would be Picnic at Hanging Rock and The Last Wave. There’s no other way to put it: sometimes you just have to take a risk and go for it... 🙂

I appreciate it. I really do. Well, maybe not entirely, but I'm getting there.
It’s a universally watchable piece that manages to be quite likable, even when the satire takes a turn toward the almost malicious. And honestly, it delivers a fantastic little payoff right at the end—a genuine touch of horror. Not the organic kind, mind you, but more of an atmospheric dread, essentially setting the mood….

sad but true:
😂 For crying out loud, Lisa James, what on earth are you even watching? 😳

Total TV junkie

Amanda Lopez50:
...I honestly think that’s the only role where she actually put in some effort. 🤔

🤔 If my memory serves me right, I caught her in Garcia by Dejan Šorak as well.

As a true cinephile, I suppose I can find it in my heart to forgive.😁

🙂 Much appreciated.
What's the best Steven Spielberg movie? in Movies ·
Joan of Arc – I actually have a soft spot for this modern take on Joan of Arc, even if we have to endure the occasional moment where Spielberg seems to be indulging in his own stylistic distractions (one wonders if he could even help himself).
The Virgin Suicides in Movies ·
It’s a bit of a lightweight film, but honestly, it’s visually stunning and easy on the eyes.
(Penelope, please forgive my blunt assessment of your cinematic taste.)

Aside from that whole business with the Force, I can't stand Star Wars 🤮 🤣

Man, you'll come to understand the Force eventually. Whether you want to or not. 😬

🙂 - It might be worth showing up properly if you’ve been MIA for the last few months. You’re going to run into a whole crowd of relatives you haven't seen in ages, so it would be the polite thing to do.

😠 Dammit! And here I was thinking I could just sneak my way out of this one. Why is it that the things we absolutely have to do are always the hardest? But fine, once a year... let's do it just to make the parents proud. 😁

wearygardener13:
Screw you all😍

🙂 :gigolo: While everyone else is busy putting on red outfits and fake beards, Pojro is bravely marching against rotten traditions. Deep down, he's discovered his inner humanist; he's realized the truth about life...
His love for humanity knows no bounds—he'll screw us all over!
Pojro—the 21st-century boy and everybody's favorite toy! 😬

...alright then... bells, bells, bells...
