True, they drag things out way too much on this album. They lost that specific vibe that made Radiohead feel so magical right up until Down... it all feels kind of hollow now, even if there are a few good moments scattered in there...

I still think Echoes is their best 😳

And Radiohead stayed magical even after Down 😳

Douglas Taylor4, can we get some more trashy picks too? 😈

Just let me know if you only want the good stuff—I can stop if so. If not, here's one record that was pretty essential back in 2007, and honestly, still kind of is:

Qui : Love's Miracle, Ipecac, 2007

image

Genre: David Yow, noise rock, and whatever else—no bass, pretty dull

So, David Yow has a new band! Or... maybe not really. I think Qui were already pretty mediocre before this (I checked out some of their MySpace stuff), and they haven't improved much with him. The group just has a guitarist and a drummer—who also sings sometimes—but they’re missing a bassist entirely. It’s a 9-track album that leans into noise rock but has those hippie vibes sprinkled in. The songs feel repetitive and way too drawn out—they might start off decent, but then they just drag on for five minutes until everyone loses interest. It all feels a bit hollow and aimless to me. I guess "Freeze" is okay, and the covers are fine (Echoes and Willie The Pimp), but covers don't really count.

Qui is playing in New York City this December, and I'm hoping Yow goes wild on stage so the live energy might actually make up for the album.

This thread is great—it’s honestly a shame it’s so small given how many killer albums we've had this year. It really has been a solid year 👋

I was actually planning to post something specific, but then I realized the album I wanted hasn't even dropped yet 😳, so I guess we'll just have to wait and see what the label decides to do. In the meantime, I'll just throw in something we've all probably already argued about, but whatever
:

Battles : Mirrored, Warp, 2007

image

Basically math, post, prog, those Smurf-like vocals, rhythm, plinking sounds, hypnosis

Battles is basically a supergroup—they're just that good. They really tear into their instruments, and you can hear it; they play around with everything, whether it's computers, keys, guitar, or drums. This album feels like it has enough sounds for five different records. They managed to cram it all into 11 weird, chaotic, mathy, nerdy, yet danceable and headbang-worthy tracks. You kind of have to listen to it repeatedly because it’s like an onion—new layers just keep popping up.
The first single was Atlas, which is easily the wildest track on the album—maybe even the best. Definitely a hit for when you want to blast music and just zone out.
They've got a video out for Tonto now, too.
Personally, my favorite is TIJ.
This feels like music from the future—album of the year, maybe even more. Apparently, they're incredible live, and gentlepuma20 says that's pretty much spot on.

what’s even funny about Behemoth 🙂
I was acting all tough, pretending I wasn't feeling anything after all that jumping—but now my neck and shoulders are absolutely killing me from headbanging at Yadnus, and I think I've even run a fever 🙂 😍 👋
stormyviper11 said:I mean, I’d still love it if they brought some actual musical variety to the set—not just pure energy. 🙂

Well, that's mostly because their albums kind of suck. 😈

But once they actually start jamming, I guess all that matters becomes irrelevant. 😳
stormyviper11 said:"Nah, before Super Mario..."

Honestly, they're just the same 🤣

I guess !!! is probably the best live band in existence 😍 😍 😍 And Nick is such a great frontman—his dancing is killer 😍 😍 Plus, that Black lady is fierce 😍 I don't really get why anyone would even bother jumping while they play 😍

I don't really get Hold Steady, though I assume it's good if people who get it say so. To me, the guy kind of reminded me of Matthew from afar. 😛

And I watched a bit of Iggy... I don't know, Mike Watt is wonderful, things were pretty loud, and Mick is what he is, and Iggy was jumping and all, but it didn't really do anything for me, I suppose. Not that I have enough info to be sure. 😬
I’m basically about to kiss you...

So I just hit up the grocery store with my ten dollar gift cards

And the cashier tells me I can't use them to buy semolina

Like, why though?

The card doesn't say anything about certain items being off-limits 🙂

🤮 🤮 🤮

the worst part about having wristbands is definitely🤮
So, I kind of wanted to brag about how Lee Ranaldo actually noticed my Brother James banner (😳) — he gave me this little smirk, too, sort of like how Santa Claus smiles at a kid who’s clearly lost their mind while asking for a million toys for Christmas.

I guess I'll just pick something that goes with my nail polish 🥳

@triangle - man, that guy who told you you could get in with just a ticket was telling the truth. but honestly, wasn't it a little weird that someone could walk into a concert with a torn ticket? didn't you used to work at a cassette shop or something?

as for those vouchers for the cabins—I guess someone had plenty to say to both Markan and me😢

Well, obviously—it goes without saying, I guess!

We spent maybe 45 minutes in line—total nightmare. Personally, I think the vouchers are fine, but nobody accounted for the typical indecisiveness of Americans at the register. You know, people showing up without any clue what they actually want to buy, leaving the cashier to explain the whole system while trying to talk over a massive PA system. You really have to factor in that American indecision.
