It'll hurt you if you're stupid. One gummy, one pill, or whatever else—you aren't going to face lasting consequences from a single instance. If you overdo it, then yeah, you'll pay for it, but that applies to everything in life.
Besides, it's hard to replicate certain mental experiences without substances. Just look at alcohol—people drink because they enjoy the sensation, and they're fully aware they'll deal with a hangover in the morning.
