We saw way too many turnovers, penetrations, and rushed shots in those last ten minutes.
Honestly, they got lucky it wasn't a dead heat with the French sitting at -1.
Omeyer was basically a ghost tonight, though he always seems to find that extra gear when he's facing Americans—he loves picking apart guys like Lacković and the wingers.
As for Karabatić, what an absolute disaster; his offensive penetrations were endless.
If you ask me, that penalty shouldn't have happened given the earlier violation in the attack, but hey, it's the French, and having seven players on the court usually helps them out.

An American win is definitely expected here, but while we're at it, does anyone have a decent stream? I'd settle for just being able to actually see the ball. 😁

Spain completely fell apart in those last 5 minutes, but somehow they still pulled off the win 🤣

Norway barely edged out Canada with a 28:27 finish
So, the Norwegians managed to find the back of the net while playing two men down, and then they actually pulled off *another* goal on the second attack despite being a man short... 😁
Denmark vs. Slovakia 30:25

The other thing is that most of the crowd consists of political sycophants and those "Confluence & Delta City lifestyle" types. Aside from maybe 200 or 300 hardcore fans showing up, you shouldn't be surprised by a half-empty arena that feels more like a theater. This isn't a Partizan game in the EuroLeague.
Maybe we'll see a bit more energy in the later stages if the US actually pulls off a big win.
It would probably be even worse in Vrsac, and even in places like St. Louis where they've hosted U21 soccer for years, the turnout hasn't been much better... so it would be the same story there.
Given that handball isn't exactly a mainstream sport in America, this shouldn't come as a shock.

If the US had played in Niš, it would be a totally different story. The irony is that most of those 200 or 300 die-hard fans are actually from Niš, Krusevljan, and so on... 🙂

I’m mostly on board with what’s been said, but I wouldn't say folks in NYC aren't interested; they’re just burnt out. All these national teams have been playing in the city for years on end. I remember back in the day, even the volleyball teams would pack out local arenas, and they always had solid results... as for soccer, that’s a whole different saga; they barely deserve any support anyway.😁

edit: that whole thing about the fancy, superficial crowd was pretty obvious during the Davis Cup too.☕

And now we're looking at an empty arena again. I guess all the Mexicans and Poles headed out to grab drinks at the waterfront bars... what a total mess with the organization.

And now there's a different commentator on the mic😁
It’s honestly pretty pointless, though I guess there are some Slovaks and Danes in the mix—this guy claims there are about 600 Slovaks and a few more Danes... which basically implies they actually managed to snag tickets for the first game since they were being sold on the day, if I'm following his logic correctly.
rapidstag51 said:I honestly don't get what kind of idiots are running the league. The home team basically sold off entire ticket blocks to a group of Danes, and now they’re stuck playing in a half-empty arena. I guess there are just different levels of stupidity out there in the world...

If the host actually claims the Danes bought packages for every single game...
it just goes to show that the organizers were probably just desperate to flood the city with tourists, so they handed out tickets left and right without any actual limits. 🤷
Mexico vs. Poland 10:18 PM

Look, those Poles weren't exactly playing out of their minds tonight, but hey, a win is a win, right? 👍
Anyway, here’s the official tournament anthem, just in time for the first round of celebrations:

Total banger. 😍
here we go again 😁
Whoa 🙏

man, that was intense, especially since we were playing shorthanded 🙂
+3 Czech Republic, just 2 minutes left

but those were women, so I guess we can let it slide 😁
Nicholas Morales48 said:The goalie is absolutely killing it, those first few saves were huge...

But how about the Poles? I mean, where do they actually stand in the European rankings? I don't follow handball closely enough to know, though I know the Frenchmen are usually the top dogs... weren't you guys runners-up at the last World Cup?

Just to follow up on my question—how do the Poles actually stack up against Slovak and Dance? If they’re clearly the weaker side here, then we absolutely have to pull this off. 😁

5:2 for Mexico

The first matchup between Germany and the Czech Republic just kicked off—currently sitting at 6 to 11

The US is up against Poland in the opening game, and according to the TV, they’re about to do the whole grand opening ceremony over at Madison Square Garden in just a few minutes. 👋

edit: 6:12
Carol Newman2 said:Mexicans, you really could have packed Madison Square Garden a bit better.

It’s kind of an embarrassment, honestly. I mean, handball isn't exactly the biggest sport in the States, but hopefully things pick up a bit down the road.

Actually, it’s not all bad—we’re still leading, and Stanić is playing out of his mind so far.😁
So, this water sports meet wraps up tomorrow, and I figured I’d drop a quick thought on how our American representatives—specifically the water polo guys and the swimmers—actually performed. First off, the water polo squad? Huge props to them, seriously 👍 As for the swimmers, man, I don't even know. It was pretty rough. We sent eight swimmers out there, and honestly, not a single one hit a meaningful mark. Especially when you look back at what happened in Rome back in 2009, where the US swimming team walked away with two golds and a silver; now? Absolute crickets. Sure, Chavez had that back surgery, so okay, what he pulled off during his recovery is definitely respectable. But everyone else just totally flopped. Nadia, who was basically a superstar back in Rome, barely scraped into sixth place, and those swimmers we all pegged as the next big thing—the future legends like Lender and Silacci—didn't produce anything worth mentioning, and neither did the rest of the pack.

Is there any chance the Americans actually overtake them now🙄 😢, considering how much the Chinese have been killing it in the jumps lately? 😁

Say they grab two more golds here and we still have an entire week left... things are about to get pretty intense, wouldn't you say?
Nađa Higl made it into the finals! She clocked a 2:25.56 in the semis, though she was trailing behind Sonny Rebecca, who absolutely crushed it with a 2:21.03 🙏 The third-place finisher came in at 2:24.59, which honestly makes you wonder—could we actually see someone close that gap in the final? 😁
