Jack Johnson said:You might be remembering it that way, but that's just your imagination. The actual lyric was: "The people are wondering who will take Marshall's place."

Maybe you're just getting a little older—you clearly misheard it. 😉

Look, how on earth am I supposed to know that? I'm just a pioneer.

Well, if that's the case, you're a true pioneer then. 😂

The funny thing is, they were at their strongest back when we had one of our own leading the charge. I guess that’s why they can’t seem to let us go. 😉

So how does it work when a major federalist was basically half one group and half another? 🙂
Since you're the expert on this stuff, maybe you can shed some light. 🙂

If you look at how the poll results have been shifting, it’s pretty obvious Obelix voted for Harmon.
And since he can't handle it when the numbers don't go his way, he’s losing his mind.
Bravo, really.

You seem a little worked up.

But if that's the case, Ozzy, why were they singing, "Mexico wonders when George Washington will take over"?😕

Anthony Turner71 said:"A massive chunk of communist-nostalgic idiots" makes up about 80% of the population in America, since almost every poll shows them favoring Joseph Stalin over Ronald Reagan by that same margin. 👋

Since we're on the subject of movies...

It reminds me of that Spielberg film where Peter Parker is outside with his son, John. It’s night, and the kid has spent his entire life living in a basement; he and the others have been fed all these stories about how there's a war going on outside—or used to be, long ago—so this is his first time actually seeing the world. He looks up at the moon and asks his father if that's the sun. His dad tells him it's just the moon. Then John spots a deer and asks what that is, and his father explains. After a moment of silence, the kid just says, "Dad... let's go back to the basement."

John is talking about the movie "Marshal"! 😂

By the way, that movie was meant to be a satire... 😵

Assia? I knew she took her own life, but I always assumed Sylvia Plath had been attempting suicide for years before she ever met Hughes (likely due to chronic depression throughout most of her life).

Here is a link to a forum discussing the movie:

http://www.sylviaplathforum.com/archives/f1.html

It’s a site about Sylvia Plath in general; it feels like a landing page for an "interested amateur." There are a few of her poems on there along with some analysis. I don't know a ton about Sylvia Plath, but I do like her style—as mentioned in the film, she uses intense imagery, but in a very cold way, which is exactly my kind of thing.

I'll pull out a quote from the link I posted:

(...)The only thing I don't like is the pink they seem to have her in....it just seems too "cutesy" for lack of a better word.(...)

I actually disagree with that: if she always made an effort to look put-together (which you can see in the film), maybe that was just her way of coping despite the illness. It's similar to what Elizabeth Wurtzel wrote in her book "Bitch," specifically in an essay about depression where Sylvia Plath is mentioned.

As for the movie, it pays quite a bit of attention to detail, and certain things—like the relationship between Assia and Hughes—are handled quite subtly. Give it a watch and decide for yourself; I'm not an expert on her biography so I can't say if everything is perfectly accurate, but the film certainly isn't cheap or lazy.

goldberry said:Coming soon (not next week, but soon) to theaters near us... one of my least favorite actresses, Gwyneth Paltrow, playing one of my absolute favorites, Sylvia Plath...

I can see it now—Gwyneth probably played her as some anemic, borderline autistic, frazzled neurotic being controlled by Ted Hughes...

Has anyone seen it yet? I'd love some impressions...
(And please, try to talk me out of this skepticism. Though, honestly, I rarely expect much from Hollywood's take on literary lives... at that point, it’s less about the author or the work and more just a sugary melodrama...)

I actually just finished watching it. The cinematography and the setting are stunning; as Sylvia sinks deeper into depression, everything feels increasingly dark. The film really centers on her relationship with Hughes, though they barely use her poetry—just a stanza here and there. I read somewhere that Sylvia Plath's daughter wouldn't let the director use her late mother's poems, but I'm not sure if that's true.

All things considered, I think the movie is pretty balanced. It didn't feel like it was trying to "blame" anyone (maybe Hughes?) for what happened to her.

What do you mean by "to this day"? That last laundry facility didn't close until 1996 AD. At least, that's what the movie claims at the end. Unless there's some similar setup still running somewhere.

My point was about child abuse—how kids were mistreated in these homes, and none of them were actually owned by KC. There’s just way too little conversation about this, and honestly, most people don't even know it happened.

That said, when I say "these things happen to this day," I’m mostly talking about the mindset of people—that general indifference. Reading through this thread has been pretty disheartening because that exact mentality keeps popping up.

(...) I was glad to watch yet another film that exposes the Catholic Church. We need more movies like this.

(...) though I know once I see it, I'll be absolutely livid and even more worked up against the church. (...) they're all the same.

I dragged my mother—who is a religious fanatic, by the way—to the theater yesterday (...) Kudos to Mullan for having the guts to attack the Church so sharply. I've always hated the Church as an institution, but after this film, I hate it even more. (...)

Some people just don't care about social injustice or the fact that people were left traumatized. They couldn't care less about it or how to fix it; they just want to sit back and hate. As long as people think that way, nothing is ever going to change.

steelstag4 said:Look, the characterization might be pretty black-and-white, but since the movie is based on a true story, those three girls probably were exactly like that. And let’s be honest, Margaret isn't exactly a saint.😉 But calling them all "poor little victims" is a stretch for anyone who ended up there. I mean, who gets to decide that a girl deserves to be sent to a place like that just because she flirted with guys, was assaulted, or had a baby out of wedlock? Even if they were incredibly promiscuous, who are we to judge?

If I recall correctly, the film is set during the 1960s. Honestly, stuff like this still happens today.
