How much control do we actually have over our own lives?

It really pisses me off when people claim we’re going to get screwed over if we aren't aggressive.
There aren't these masterminds roaming the US looking for victims to exploit. It's more like everyone just grabs what they can without even realizing they might be stepping on someone—especially when the other person is basically letting it happen.
I guess we're mostly the ones "tailoring" our own lives...
even if where you're born sets some baseline, I think the biggest limit is just who you actually are. You can't really be someone else... everything else is pretty much changeable.
Having a decent view of yourself matters. If you do, others tend to see you that way too. Obviously, you won't please everyone, but if you carry yourself like a happy, capable, and worthwhile person, people will gravitate toward that. Not saying you have to be a genius or a supermodel, obviously.
Breaking out of a routine or those shackles we feel were forced on us is possible. It's just a matter of whether we actually want to.
We're creatures that crave order, I guess. Plus, it's often easier to stay in a shitty comfort zone than to face the unknown. Sometimes the fear of losing friends or having no community at all outweighs the desire to actually make things better.
I've just touched on a few things here and there, pretty randomly. Feel free to jump in with your own thoughts.

Visually, everything Quentin Tarantino has done since Kill Bill just hits different for me..
Then there's Blade Runner.. and maybe even the peak (though it's more of an experience than a movie), the Coen brothers (I binged 5 of their tapes in two weekends... the intensity of that war era was unreal)
