Nonverbal communication tips? in Psychology ·

Honestly, that’s more of a mantra you should probably be reciting to your own reflection every morning.

To pick up on things about people that they think they're hiding perfectly well.
Just to grab a little extra intel here and there.
Mostly just out of pure curiosity.

my own experience tells me that this is usually what people dive into when they're blind to what others are actually trying to tell them, and frankly, when they're feeling pretty insecure.
Well, your experience is clearly flawed. You might want to go find some better ones.

and my take would be this: if I was able to learn it, then surely anyone else could have picked it up too. And once someone masters those cues, they can certainly learn how to fake them.
I’ve heard that this stuff is studied most intensely in the hilly parts of the North America, where maybe only 8% of the population holds any advanced degrees. 😬

besides those folks who specifically studied the signs, you also have people who are just naturally gifted at manipulating language and facial expressions... because they know exactly where to strike and they treat you like a puppet on a string.
You really need to keep "training" constantly, otherwise, you'll leave yourself wide open to being manipulated by people like that.
It seems like you're giving up a little too easily. 😬

So what you’re saying is that when someone feels awkward or uncomfortable, they try to mask it—which essentially turns into hiding, shutting down, or, if they have that particular inclination, just straight-up lying. It makes sense why those seasoned pathological liars can look you right in the eye without blinking; they know that steady gaze makes the whole act much more convincing.

The thing is, this person is usually incredibly blunt, which is exactly why I was so thrown off by it; seeing them act like that was a total departure from their usual, very direct personality.

As for the whole lying thing, I actually picked up on something similar while watching a documentary about pro poker players. They mentioned that about 80% of the game is really just reading body language—things like where you're looking, how you furrow your brows, or even just subtle movements around the mouth. At its core, poker is basically a game of deception designed to trick your opponent into making the wrong call.☕

Hey everyone!
I’ve been scrolling through the recent posts, but I haven't quite managed to track down a link to what I’m actually most interested in: nonverbal communication 🙂
I'm not entirely sure if that falls strictly under the umbrella of psychology or psychoanalysis—and by the way, could someone actually clarify the distinction between those two for me?—but I have a feeling it’s a topic that would catch anyone's eye on this forum.
So, if you happen to have any insightful takes on how nonverbal cues play out in our day-to-day lives, please, do share them.
I also wanted to ask:
Does anyone know what it actually means when someone spends about 90% of a conversation staring at the floor instead of making eye contact? Is that just a general sign of discomfort, or am I overthinking it?
Well, here we go again—those miserable winter months have rolled back around, and my feet are absolutely freezing 🙄 which inevitably leads to my hands feeling like actual blocks of ice 🙄 .

The strangest part about it all is that I don't actually feel cold in general; instead, my feet just regularly turn into solid chunks of ice.

It’s such a weird cycle where my feet are deathly cold while my hands stay perfectly warm, and it just keeps looping like that.😕 ???

Does anyone have any actual solutions for this annoying little problem? Maybe something alternative, acupuncture, anything... just please don't tell me to go for a run every day, because I've already been hitting the gym consistently for three months now.
