Religion classes in school - Megathread in Students & Teens ·
In third grade, they actually keep track of which kids attend Mass. Some teachers are probably stricter about it than others, but it’s definitely mandatory for the students.
Of course, nobody in the world can force parents to show up, too. 😁

Religious education was never actually mandatory in schools 😁 I went through school back in the 90s and I never attended religion class 😁

I haven't heard anything about skipping it in first or second grade; by third grade, it's pretty much mandatory everywhere. At least from what I've gathered, you can't really get out of it once you hit third grade.

Why would you think a lab tech or a chef wouldn't be interested in reading?
Why assume that if someone isn't in the humanities, they shouldn't have any background in literature at all?

I can’t believe I actually heard someone say, "Ladies, if you don't agree with him (Aristotle), then you clearly haven't understood him. See you next semester."
I honestly have no idea if she actually got it or not, but he certainly doesn't know either since he didn't ask a single follow-up question after that.
I used to have professors who actually encouraged debate, but I can only imagine being handed an F just because you dared to suggest Karenina might have been a bit foolish.

Well, it seems like we have an English teacher in the house here
What’s the actual goal of assigned reading?
Is it about building literacy skills, or just exposing students to the great classics?

I’ve been reading for as long as I can remember, tackling most of my school reading lists well before they were actually assigned. I even picked up Hemingway, for instance 😍
. That said, some books just didn't click for me, and I honestly couldn't force myself to finish them.
Take *The Last Tycoons*, for example.
Man, I was bored to tears after just twenty pages and had to shut the book. It was the same story with *In Search of Lost Time* and *The Mountains*.
So many books, so little time 😁
. I’d love to revisit a few of those old classics from school, listen to some recommendations, and give them another shot. Maybe I could finally pull off an A.

I’m about halfway through my required reading list right now.😂
First off, we really need to define what "required reading" actually means. Is it a fundamental part of an education, or just an institutionalized attempt to force kids to read?
If it's the former, then I honestly don't see any issue with books like *Judith and the Mountains*.
But if it's the latter, then the entire selection of books needs a serious overhaul.
In my opinion, elementary schools should focus more on engaging, fun books, while still including those essential classics regardless of how "exciting" they are.
By high school, well... if you loved reading, you loved it; if you didn't, it's probably not going to happen.

I actually had some of my best discussions with teachers when I ended up hating the book we were assigned reading

frozenrider15, where do you think I could find a sundress with straps? Honestly, there are so many options out there, and I'm feeling a little lost myself

Me too 😂 and I actually love that I get a little thrill every single time. It means I haven't already Googled 😁

I mean, why get worked up? 😂
I actually explained to my little girl that parents are usually at fault here, because they are. Of course, an 8-year-old isn't really equipped to grasp how some people can be so incredibly foolish.

I have no idea where you live, but it sounds like somewhere lovely 😂
I live in a part of Chicago that isn't exactly known for being religious or overly patriotic, so my little girl has already dealt with all sorts of situations 😁
She’s got a sharp tongue and handled everything just fine, but I can still tell it bothers her that one girl won't play with her because she doesn't attend Sunday school.
I explained to her that it isn't her fault—that someone else just didn't teach that child better—but the topic still pops up in our conversations from time to time.
Luckily, it doesn't upset her deeply; she isn't heartbroken or anything, she just finds the whole thing confusing and a bit silly.
If you're curious, I could write out some of the things she's heard while growing up in this trendy neighborhood 😁

It’s true that people will act hostile everywhere you go, but please let me be a parent who wants to protect my child from being exposed to that in school, and doesn't want them forced into religious studies during class hours.

I decided not to enroll my kid in religion classes because I believe they need to learn how to deal with idiots, and it's my job to teach them not to hang their head or force themselves to fit in just to please others.
But honestly, I'd much rather we tackle these life lessons through easier, less controversial topics than diving straight into religion here in the States.

Hey everyone, I need your take on this.
Let's be honest and not pretend we live in such an advanced society where attending religious education classes is just like signing up for a German language course.

Anyone claiming they're the same thing either isn't seeing reality or simply refuses to.
Can any of you actually imagine someone saying something like
"I'm not playing with you because you don't take German lessons, and anyone who skips them is a bad person"?

It’s honestly pretty mindless. How can anyone act as a homeroom teacher to kids they don't actually know, especially when they only see them once a week?

What about the other elective subjects? Or is that just a perk for the teachers?

I actually had my art grade reports and all those little art tests.
Well, starting from fifth grade, though even my little sister doesn't have her report cards in second grade anymore.
I went to school through seventh grade, although I had classes on Saturdays too—just for sixth and seventh grade before they eventually phased them out.

Why would they be any harder now? The kids have their exams scheduled way in advance! Seriously, they're planned out! Plus, they don't even have two on the same day 😂
Back home, we’d probably have to beg and plead just to get a third one rescheduled.
The textbooks are full of pictures, illustrations, and all sorts of fluff—not to mention they're about a quarter as thick as our old ones.
The whole teaching style is actually pretty cool; the kids are more involved in class and have access to tons of info and videos to help them study.

It’s just like everything else 😁 grades have to be entered. Does anyone know if it takes a long time for them to show up after someone submits them? They're supposed to be done by the deadline, but I know things can get delayed sometimes.
