What is social intelligence? in Psychology ·
Walter Myers4 said:Oh, sure. Typical. Just when you think you've finally got a handle on things, someone drops an "aha" like they just solved cold fusion or discovered fire. Give me a break. It’s always the same thing with people—acting like they’ve stumbled onto some massive epiphany when really, they're just being smug. Honestly, I don't have the patience for this kind of attitude today. My coffee is already cold, my morning commute was a nightmare, and now I have to deal with this? Unbelievable.
I honestly can’t focus on two things at once. It’s impossible. Trying to deal with my own life while simultaneously tracking all the social dynamics around me? Forget it. My brain just hits a wall. One minute I'm trying to get my own act together, and the next, I'm getting sucked into everyone else's drama or trying to read the room, and suddenly I've completely lost my train of thought. It's exhausting.

But how are you even supposed to notice some cute guy checking you out if you're stuck inside your own head? Like, what are you even doing for yourself in that moment anyway?😕

Walter Myers4 said:Because I care about MY OWN damn content! I’m here to fix MY own problems. I couldn't care less about some social dynamic, God forbid.

So you're telling me you're missing out on catching a glimpse of some hot kids?😲

placidranger said:If he truly didn't care, he’d be perfectly content in his own head—he wouldn't feel... well, I'm quoting him here: "like a complete idiot because a flood of information is rushing past me and I'm not catching any of it," or "sometimes I get this irritating feeling like I'm disconnected from the group."

And honestly, I suspect that stuff becomes a lot more interesting once you start studying it. Humans are pack animals; we're hardwired to obsess over other people and the messy web of relationships between us.

Nah, man, it’s way simpler than that. The guy just missed his shot with some girl, felt a little bummed out about it, and then we all jumped in here to perform a deep psychological autopsy on his entire existence as a social creature...😍

Walter Myers4 said:Exactly. People who obsess over "social dynamics" are usually just people who don't have enough going on in their own lives.
I honestly don't have the energy to waste even thinking about what's going on with everyone else's little social games.

I mean, come on, you've clearly dropped at least 12 or 13 posts here already...

Walter Myers4 said:Sure, though that's a pretty weak way to go about it (just copying the competition).
It's much better to focus on developing and leaning into your own actual competitive advantages.

Reading this whole back-and-forth, man... even though I definitely side more with what Walter Myers4 is saying, the whole vibe feels like watching two high school football coaches arguing over how to drill their players to maximize their draft stock. It's all about market value, right? Seems to me like maybe we should be using a different language entirely when it comes to the messy, romantic, interpersonal stuff...😁

brightotter7 said:I'm not sure if "social intelligence" is even the right term for this, but feel free to set me straight if I'm off base 🙂

So, look, I'm just not great at navigating group dynamics or picking up on those unspoken social cues. To give you an idea: say I’m out at a bar with my buddies, and I am definitely NOT going to notice if some girl is checking me out. Like, a friend will go, "Hey, she's looking at you," and I'll just stare back totally clueless, wondering why she'd be interested in *me*. Then another friend chimes in and confirms it, and I’m still just sitting there like... what? It's the same deal with all those tiny little signals people throw around in groups. Sometimes I feel like a complete idiot because there's this constant stream of information flying around me and I'm just missing it entirely. I don't really care much about what someone's wearing, what kind of car they drive, or obsessing over every little detail—unless it's actually a juicy story, obviously. I'm not socially awkward or anything; I can hold a conversation and I love a good joke, but I guess I just miss the subtleties.
Anyone else deal with this? How would you even label it? Am I just the guy sitting in the cave planning the strategy while everyone else is busy hunting mammoths? Help!

I honestly don't see the issue here. Nobody notices everything. You just miss the stuff you aren't tuned into. And sometimes there's just too much noise to process, like when you're out at a club and there are dozens of girls everywhere... who could even track where everyone is looking?
The second you spot a girl you actually find attractive, I highly doubt you won't realize if she's eyeing you back...

Taylor Howard36 said:I'm "listening"... 🙂to what Laing actually had to say... 🙂

Basically, he argues that people "break" because society itself is totally dysfunctional. It’s about those crazy patterns you see in families... just being unable to handle the weight of the world. He almost suggests that Sch. isn't some disease, but more like a "journey" someone takes to try and find themselves. Back in the sixties and seventies, his ideas really shook up the whole psychiatry scene. His books were huge hits back then: "split self", "experience politics", "fact of life", "me and the others", and stuff like that...

briskgull27 said:Are you trying to flirt with me? I see what you're doing. But honestly, that just isn't true.😕 😕
Why not try doing a quick search online?😕 😕

Man, how would I even know what you look like? I'm telling you, I've heard this and read about it everywhere... like, there's actually data suggesting that being a bit more overweight might actually help some people avoid Sch. I'm talking actual percentages here. I'm not even messing around...
Schizophrenia - General Discussion in Psychology & Therapy ·
briskgull27 said:Haha, but according to official statistics, you're looking at just 1% of the population.

briskgull27, maybe you've heard the rumors... is it actually true that the highest percentage is among thin, smart Black women, and they tend to burn out fast once they hit their late 20s?😕

Taylor Howard36 said:Man, what actually happens inside the brain of someone with schizophrenia? Beyond all that chemical imbalance talk you guys were hitting on earlier?😕 Is it really just a matter of chemistry?😕

Honestly, nobody knows for sure yet. But I wouldn't be surprised if we get a real answer soon... modern neurology and neuropsychology are moving at a crazy fast pace these days...
d. Laing thought it wasn't just about the chemistry...

briskgull27 said:Honestly, since we’ve known each other for so long, I can tell you straight up: I would absolutely die on a boat. I tried it once, and it was just not my thing at all.

I’m doing well, actually—maybe even a little better than usual. Still, nobody from SCH has reached out yet. Are they just being completely crazy, or did they lose their computers or something? Who knows! Anyway, how about you??😁 🙂

I know this girl from SCH. Haven't actually seen her in two years, though. She’s got a computer. When she’s doing alright, she gets stuff done, handles the practical side of things, passes her exams, and basically acts like SCH doesn't even exist. But when things go south... man, she falls apart so hard she wouldn't even be able to turn the computer on. Or so it seemed to me once...

You know how hard it is to accept that you'll be living with a disability for the rest of your life.

Thanks for always being active here.🙂
There are some groups mentioned on the previous pages, along with links.
I'm just speaking my mind here; I'm not necessarily looking for a handout. I'm just making some noise because I know there are others out there struggling in silence, and I consider myself one of them.
And since I'm feeling pretty fired up: half the people on these anxiety and depression forums are basically acting like they've lost touch with reality.
They can all kick my ass. Cos I m a smath ass.

And don't even get me started on the politics section. If you look there... man. I can't shake the feeling that the whole thing is just one big psych ward. Every third post I read makes me want to just type, "So... you feel better now?" and walk away...

Wait... hold on. I was just thinking about this earlier today while grabbing coffee at Starbucks... everything feels like it's moving way too fast lately. Like, seriously. One minute you're chilling, and the next, the whole world feels different. It’s wild... anyway, what was I saying? Oh yeah... just some random thought that popped into my head out of nowhere. Just felt like sharing it here. Hope everyone's having a good one... kaže:
So, I got hit with some compliments today... weird vibes, honestly. Someone told me they were proud of me... then said they actually see my self-assurance as a strength... and then—get this—they actually thought I was being narcissistic... just kind of sat there processing that one for a minute... 😂 😂 😂

Haha, any other crazies out there? Come on, say hi... I think I'm basically running this whole thread solo right now...

The other crazies—and honestly, a few of us who haven't even gotten our official paperwork from the psych ward yet—are mostly out there in the stands... just happily letting you take up at least half the spotlight.🙂

briskgull27 said:So, about ten days ago, I was grabbing coffee with a close friend of mine. Looking at her, you could just tell she’s genuinely happy. She’s totally "normal." Honestly, she looks as radiant and carefree as a slim American woman on vacation.
She just gets it—she knows right from wrong. She has a solid grasp on how the world and society actually work.
The thing is, I can't even share my real thoughts with her. To me, some things feel perfectly fine, but to her, they seem completely broken. Why? Because she’s polite. She’s beautiful. She stays on top of every trend. She loves dogs, and she holds these very conventional, "correct" views on everything. Life is going to be much smoother for her because she isn't stubborn. Plus, she respects her entire family, no matter what they're like. She’s just... normal.

But me? I never once wish to be "normal."

I said to my old man one evening, "Now that I've got this yellow card, I can finally say and think whatever I want."
He just looked at me and said, "You didn't need a card to do that."
And I just laughed. Hehe!

The way you described that friend of yours... who would even dare tell her what they really think? I have a feeling if you tried, she'd be checking her watch pretty fast during that coffee date...😉

briskgull27 said:No, I haven't, though I've heard nothing but great things about its quality.
Personally, my top picks are always Africa or maybe Oceania.

Yeah, the movie is top-tier. But that young Swiss woman in Kenya with the Kenyans and their whole vibe regarding gender roles? Not exactly great... she ended up heading straight back home.
Schizophrenia - General Discussion in Psychology & Therapy ·
briskgull27 said:Honestly, I know exactly where I'm headed.

Imagine finding a doctor in Kenya and then working as a beach waitress in a bikini on those sunny Kenyan shores. Doesn't that sound like quite the adventure?😁

Ugh, don't even go there unless you have to. Anyway, have you ever seen that movie "White Maasai"?

briskgull27 said:I totally get that. It's such a paradox; back when I was working summer jobs in Florida, I slept in rooms packed with people.
When you're broke, you aren't even worried about your own safety, are you?

And man, they certainly made themselves at home with my food!😂 😂 😂 😂

I'd probably just give you one of my sleeping pills so you could finally get some rest.😍

I honestly think people dealing with schizophrenia have way more reason to be terrified of "normal" people than the other way around.

Samuel Murphy13 said:Professional help should start with talking to a psychologist, not jumping straight to a psychiatrist. In my book, you save the psychiatrists for the really high-risk patients. My boyfriend just needs someone to point him toward the right therapy and figure out which meds he can take and when. As for his fear about things getting worse... he’s worried about turning violent and becoming a threat to people around him. That's just how those consequences play out...

But wait, if he's only seeing a psychologist now, who actually gave him the schizophrenia diagnosis in the first place? And honestly, people struggling with mental illness are usually way less dangerous than those "healthy" psychopaths and sociopaths out there...
Jason Sanchez3 said:I get it, it's all mental, I totally get that......
but I think I just need some solo time to clear my head, you know? Just a week or two to reset before trying to start over.....
whatever that looks like 🙂

it’s not even really about the other person... it's more about how everything else just lined up wrong.....

If you want me to be a total buzzkill, I went through the exact same thing after being together from junior year through graduation. My girl felt the same way. But man, we just couldn't make it work. It was over.👎

True, but still... I don't know...😕
