I have a question about kickboxing. I’m planning to start training to get in shape and also to learn some fighting techniques and self-defense. Since I’m a total beginner, I want to know when sparring actually starts. Is it mandatory? What kind of gear is used for protection? It seems pretty stupid for a newbie like me to jump right in against someone experienced who might just crush me or leave me bruised up like a ragdoll. I’m asking because my job involves working in retail sales, so I can't exactly show up to work with a bruised face or anything similar. I still want to do this recreationally, though.

If you work directly with customers, sparring could definitely be an issue.

Nobody can give you a guarantee—not even after years of training—that you won't take a hit to the face during a session.

Broken noses, fractured cheekbones, and bruises are all real possibilities.

You basically have to decide if you can accept that risk, or you won't be able to spar effectively because you'll be too busy overthinking it.

It’s perfectly normal for people to be afraid of getting hurt.
In your case, you'll have that extra layer of anxiety about showing up to work with a bruise.

Alright, but why is it actually like that?

Is someone in a high-level position within the organization playing for their team, or what?

I've actually managed to stay disciplined. I'm doing those shoulder exercises my physiatrist showed me every single day.

I added some extra full-body stretching to my routine. Now I have a complete set of mobility and strength exercises that I knock out every single day outside of my regular workouts. It’s been working out really well for me.

I went through the exact same thing about six months ago. I messed up my left shoulder.

A bit of electricity, some ultrasound, a little physical therapy, and now everything is feeling great.

Everything revolves around the government these days. It’s wild to think about, especially since I'm still so young. 🙂 He got his term quite quickly.

In any case, I’d recommend having a professional take a look at that shoulder. They can give you the best advice on how to handle it.

I don't follow things closely enough to know all the fine details, but I’ve noticed people always get heated about the referees. Usually, it's just those who are losing or whose favorites just took an L.

It doesn't matter. I'm sure there's some truth to what you're saying.

I just can't bridge the gap between your username, your takes, and the simple fact that you're a pit bull from Los Angeles.😛

Walter Mendoza5 said:The Pride Shop website shows various bags available for purchase.
However, it mentions that the bags arrive empty.
How does that work?
And if I decide to buy one, what am I supposed to fill it with?

I filled mine with some old clothes and rags.

The guy I ordered it from actually made it for me.

It settled down a bit after a while, so there's some extra room at the top, but otherwise, it's fine.

If you happen to be in the Chicago area, check out UFK Trešnjevka or UFK Dubrava.

Eric Taylor5 said:So, here’s the deal... I haven't done any serious training in years, but I just started back up. I dealt with a lot of muscle soreness at first, but that cleared up once I started using some Icy Hot and everything. Now, though, I'm getting calluses on my feet, especially around my big toes and on the soles of both feet. Will these go away like the muscle soreness did, or will the skin just stay hard? What kind of socks should I be wearing to prevent this, and how can I fix it quickly? I'm 17, by the way. Thanks in advance.

Man, you really take me back. 🙂

When I was doing martial arts, we always trained barefoot, so those calluses were just part of the game.

Eventually, your feet just toughen up. You won't get them as often, and even when you do, they sting like hell.

Was it April Fools' Day recently or what?

I am 21 years old, standing 195 cm tall and weighing approximately 90 kg. I used to play basketball quite frequently on a recreational basis, but over the last few years, I have completely lost my conditioning. I have always harbored an interest in practicing some form of martial arts—strictly recreationally, of course—but I am genuinely at a loss as to which discipline would suit me best. Does anyone have any recommendations? Ideally, I would prefer something located near Jarun...

If you're starting from scratch, stick to boxing, Muay Thai, or wrestling.

Morgan Alvarez3 here. I’ve been spending quite a bit of time lately reflecting on the nuances of our recent discussions... It really makes you think about how much perspective shifts when you step back from the immediate noise. I find myself leaning toward a more measured approach to these topics. There is a certain rhythm to a good debate, provided everyone stays composed... It’s all about finding that balance between passion and reason. Looking forward to seeing where the conversation heads next... kaže:
Hey there! I’m 23 years old and looking to dive into some martial arts, but I’m feeling a bit stuck on which direction to take. I stand about 5'8" and weigh around 165 lbs, and my main interests right now are boxing, Muay Thai, or wrestling. I realize those three are pretty different from one another, but I’d love some advice on which one might be the best fit for me... or even some specific gym recommendations if you have them. My biggest priority is finding something that actually has practical, real-world application, just in case I ever find myself in a situation where I truly need it. I am a total beginner when it comes to combat sports, though I used to be quite active before focusing on other things, so I'd say I'm in pretty solid shape overall...

I’m living over in the Maksimir neighborhood, so having the club located nearby would definitely be a major plus... though honestly, that isn't my top priority. My main concern is just making sure we aren't right on top of Jarun or anything like that. More importantly, I'd really prefer if the training sessions were held during the evening hours...

I’ve been hearing quite a bit lately about the Holy Spirit and Muay Thai... It’s an interesting combination of concepts to wrap one's head around... One deals with the profound depths of spiritual connection, while the other is all about grit, discipline, and physical intensity on the mats... It makes you wonder how those two worlds might actually intersect if you look closely enough...

I find myself facing a very similar dilemma... I’m standing about 6'4" and weighing in at around 198 pounds, and I'm 23 years old as well... I've wanted to dive into a combat sport for quite some time now, but making that final decision has proven to be surprisingly difficult...😢

You won't go wrong with Muay Thai.

Take a look at this. If you aren't feeling it, we move on. 🙂
Height requirements for fighters in Martial Arts & Combat Sports ·
Jerry Wilson89 said:Is it possible for a shorter fighter to move up to the heavyweight division to take on taller opponents? Could someone actually find success there regardless of their height? I’ve heard there might be specific rules regarding height, not just weight classes.

The minimum requirement is usually 5'0".

I believe Mike Tyson was relatively short for his division...
Beginner question: How do I choose the right sport? in Martial Arts & Combat Sports ·
Did you actually read what the guy was asking?

The whole point was that he wants to train with a Bo staff.🙂

I’m a huge fan of boxing myself, but I don't think that's really what he's looking for...

Gerald Smith76 said:If someone wants to train with a Japanese staff that's over five feet long, why send them downtown to work on Filipino stick-fighting segments using 24-inch sticks? And why should weapon choice depend on their body type?

Look, if you’re 6'6" and 260 pounds, a warhammer probably fits you better. If you're small, maybe a knife is more practical.🙂

Then again, I've seen some smaller guys (like 😍 who hangs out here) handle heavy weapons with total confidence.

Scott Garcia10 said:Just one quick follow-up question... I read somewhere that some training sessions involve spitting in an opponent's face. I have no idea if that's actually true or just some urban legend, but it sounds incredibly stupid to me. Does that kind of thing actually happen in any of these clubs?

Spitting is technically considered one of the "natural" weapons in ninjutsu.
Obviously, we don't practice that during training sessions...

I'm looking to see if there are any martial arts studios in Annapolis, maybe something like karate, ninjutsu, or judo.

Does anyone have a phone number, email address, or a physical location I can reach out to?

I'm also curious about what the monthly membership fees usually look like for these types of sports.

As for recommendations, I’d prefer something where I can learn flips (front and back) and other tricks similar to parkour. www.parkour.hr ....

Thanks for understanding.
