I believe parents of first graders have a responsibility to help their kids tackle schoolwork, master the curriculum, and build actual work habits.
The first four years of elementary school are the foundation. That’s when parents need to step up. If they don't, by the time the workload ramps up in middle school, the kid won't have a clue how to work independently.
Otherwise, you just end up with parents in the upper grades doing all the reading assignments and other nonsense because "the poor kid is too overwhelmed." It's a mess.
