It’s not really about some vague "pressure" per se; it’s more about the actual pressure inside your body needing to equalize with the cabin pressure. You see, as the cabin pressure drops, the gases inside you expand, and if your nose is stuffed up, you can't equalize properly, which is why it starts hurting so much... You should try chewing a lot, swallowing, and pinching your nose with your fingers to blow alternately through each nostril to help pop your ears.
And honestly, if your nose isn't completely clear, of course it's going to hurt during the flight—especially when you're landing. Even just a little bit of congestion in there is enough to mess everything up, making it impossible for the pressure to equalize.
