So that explains why I look terrible in certain shots
Holy hell, seriously? That first redhead looks like a completely different person on the left. Her face is way longer and thinner, her nose looks worse, her eyes seem too wide-set, and those lines around her mouth are super deep
Does this whole focal length issue mess with video too, or is it strictly a photo thing?

Damn, what the fuck. That first ginger girl looks totally different on the left. Her face is longer and narrower, her nose is uglier, her eyes are set too far apart and her nasolabial folds are more pronounced
does this same focal length lens thing applies to video as well or just photos?
Yeah, it hits video too. It's the exact same logic as photography. You've got light rays passing through the lens onto a light-sensitive sensor.
That’s why in photography, if you're doing portraits, you usually lean toward a 50mm lens (that's the classic standard, though digital specs vary slightly) to keep facial proportions looking "normal."
Plus, you definitely don't want your face right up against the lens. It's basic physics—things closer to you look bigger than things further away. It's the same reason why if you take a gym selfie from a high angle, your shoulders end up looking massive. 😁
