The start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine (Part 1) in War in Ukraine ·
Looks like China might make a move soon. Maybe they'll go after Taiwan

They're just taking advantage of everything right now.

I guess, is there even any info on Ukrainian losses in this war? Every news report says Russ is losing massive amounts, but nothing about Ukrainians.
And I don't see any pictures or videos or anything like that anywhere

And there aren't even any photos. I mean, that plane was huge

They’ve really gone too far this time. From what I can gather, they'd be facing the death penalty in any US state for doing something like this.

If Russia had come at them with everything they had, the casualties on both sides would be way higher. If that happened, then maybe I'd actually believe those Ukrainian reports about losing a few thousand Russians.
Russia is trying to handle this a different way too, but I guess it might already be too late for any of that. They'll probably have to hit harder if they want to wrap up this war, which, you know, has been dragging on for eight years now.

German outlets are saying even the West doesn't get why Russia is only using a small fraction of the troops they've got stationed along the border with Ukraine

Furthermore—if Russia were to hit any city within the EU or NATO with nuclear weapons—NATO would respond 100%. It’s simple: radiation doesn't respect borders.

If those are American bases, just like the ones in Turkey

I guess radiation from somewhere like Amsterdam wouldn't reach London or Paris, so I'm just wondering if the French or Brits would actually risk themselves for everyone else

I guess Scholz would be down for picking and choosing who gets kicked out of SWIFT, but he won't touch anything involving Russia as a whole
Man, what does that even matter
I mean, what about being hooked on Russian oil and gas?

Sam Martinez9 said:I have to disagree. Nuclear weapons come in all different yields and ranges, and Putin would likely use the more powerful ones to target European cities far from the Russian border. I'm thinking specifically of major cities in the United Kingdom and the European Union—essentially, cities within NATO member states.

In my view, only a madman would initiate a war like the one Putin has started, and a madman will certainly resort to nuclear weapons if he feels like it. To him, individual lives aren't the priority; his objectives are.

It’d be pretty interesting to see how NATO reacts if Putin, say, wiped out Amsterdam since the Dutch don't have nukes.
Would someone like Biden or Macron actually risk London or Paris by hitting back at Moscow?

I thank my friend Mr. President of 🇹🇷 @RTErdogan and the people of 🇹🇷 for their strong support. The Ban on The passage of 🇷 🇺 warships to The Black Sea and significant military and humanitarian support for 🇺🇦 are extremely important today. The people of 🇺🇦 will never forget that!

No one else has even mentioned this yet, and I guess I don't really see why the Turks would even be allowed to do that

I personally stick to The Morning Post and The Evening Post,
while keeping an eye on German or Austrian outlets,
along with Reuters and Associated Press.
In my view, those remain the most concrete sources available.
I give CNN, Index, RT, and the like a wide berth,
as do most government agencies on either side of the aisle,
and I haven't used unverified Twitter profiles as a news source
since the Arab Spring.
The constant linking of random Twitter garbage is genuinely irritating,
especially when it turns out to be old footage from last year or just a video game.
One might naively assume that this level of technological and internet advancement
would lead to greater transparency in tracking conflicts,
but it really just adds to the confusion and information chaos.

Even the Germans are saying Ukrainians might be exaggerating things a bit, like how they downplay losses.

GustiSok said:I mean, hardly anyone actually thinks Russia didn't have a tactical plan ready for this invasion, let alone that they’re running out of missiles in just a few days. But for some weird reason, people seem to think a successful military operation means zero casualties, or that high-end gear is somehow indestructible, and that wars are won overnight. I guess if you just glance at a headline saying Germany crushed Poland in 1939 but skip the part where it took them over a month to grab half the territory—and that was a much smaller country being hit from both sides—then yeah, you might think a war like this is won in a heartbeat without losses. A Tiger tank wasn't legendary because it was invincible—hundreds of them were blown up. It was good because it actually let them carry out operations and take out enemy armor. Success is about stats, not perfection. I don't think we can call this invasion a success or failure yet. One thing is pretty certain, though... Ukrainians aren't going down without a fight.

Yeah, totally. I don't think anyone really thought all of Ukraine would just fall without a fight.

Who actually gives a damn about Telegram? If there’s anything more unreliable than Twitter, it’s definitely Telegram. There’s zero oversight, zero rules... just total chaos.

And then all this news in the media... it's all just coming from Twitter or Telegram anyway.
I guess which journalists actually go out on the front lines?

Yeah. Like, you can't even post your own thoughts without getting labeled a troll.
