Anyone still running Windows 7? in Software ·
Brian Campbell36 said:Is this happening to me, or am I just looking at someone else's headache?

After I cleared out that log file, my Windows 7 went into a bit of a meltdown and automatically shut down all my services; now I've got absolutely no sound and my web browser won't connect to the internet at all.

I spent quite a while tinkering around to try and restore everything to normal, but unfortunately, the exact same issue keeps popping back up.🤷

Noup, for raca Boy 😁

To honestly sounds like an issue with your graphics card to me. If you have a moment, try swapping that GPU into another machine and let me know if the same thing happens there.

At the end of the day, everyone has their own preferences, and I truly believe that we should all be free to decide exactly what we choose to install on our own computers. 👍

I certainly don't mean to imply that you lack intelligence or anything of the sort; I'm simply suggesting that from a purely technical standpoint, things can get incredibly complicated sometimes. 😁

No offense intended, but setting your primary system language to something other than English is just asking for trouble.

If you ever run into a technical glitch, there is a 99.9% chance you aren't going to be searching for the solution in anything but English. Plus, if you look at how most software and operating systems are translated from English into local dialects, it’s honestly quite laughable.

Seriously, no disrespect here. I was helping an elderly neighbor set up Windows 7 about two weeks ago, and I made sure to download the English Language pack immediately because they don't have a clue how to navigate an interface in English.

As it has already been pointed out—

Matthew Young35 said:It isn't about being ashamed of my native tongue; it's just that our language becomes incredibly clunky when dealing with specific IT terminology.
On top of that, it seems like whoever handles these translations clearly doesn't have a background in computer science.
In the tech world, English is the absolute standard, and trying to fight that is basically tilting at windmills.
Jacob Chase42 said:If you guys work in IT or whatever field you're in, and you know that Reddit is getting hit with traffic, why don't you just fix it?

For years now, people have been complaining about slow loading times and those pesky 503 errors. Regular users didn't ask for this site to be founded, and I certainly didn't either. At the end of the day, it falls on the founder to scale up the server capacity, which seems to be an issue here...

There is one specific thing called a "prune," where they clear out old content starting from a date they decide. However, that means all those posts are gone forever, and it would probably wipe out everyone's post counts too—though I'm not entirely sure if there's a way to keep the post counts the same even after a massive prune occurs.

I imagine you see the downside of that approach, since posts and threads just vanish into thin air. Another option would be for them to upgrade their hosting plan, though considering how much traffic this place gets, I suspect they are already paying for a massive enterprise-grade package that costs a fortune (unless, of course, they have a major sponsor covering the bill).

Personally, I'm sitting here on a router using a pretty weak wireless signal right now, so I occasionally run into 503 errors that I just resolve by hitting F5. When I'm back home on my own router, or whenever I can find a spot with a stronger signal, I rarely have any trouble accessing the forum at all. ☕
Jacob Chase42 said:Reddit is easily the slowest forum in the country, if not anywhere else.

Every other site I visit, even most niche forums, seems to load way faster than Reddit.

I can't really say I agree, because everything seems to open up quite quickly on my end. I'll admit that I occasionally run into an error where I have to hit refresh, but overall, things tend to launch pretty fast for me. I actually just ran some quick pings against Google, CNN, and even the local news sites, and everything is hovering right around the same speed. Even when I have several tabs open including this one, I don't really feel any significant lag.🤷

I’m glad you included that link; I realized after clicking it that the email address listed there is one I haven't touched in years, so it was a helpful heads-up. 🙂
Timothy Evans2 said:A quick question for the moderators:

-I'm likely switching internet service providers soon, so I was wondering if I need to update my registration here with a new email address, and how much of a headache it actually is if I just decide to start a brand new account with the new one?

You don't strictly have to change your email, though it’s definitely a good idea. Heaven forbid you ever lose track of your password; if you go to click that "forgot password" link, the reset will be sent to whatever address you have on file, and if that's an old account you can no longer access, you'll be locked out. Of course, this only applies if you originally signed up using an email address provided directly by your ISP. If you used a personal account—like Gmail, Outlook, or Yahoo—that stays yours regardless of which provider you use for your connection. You could certainly just create a whole new user profile, but honestly, it's much easier (it really only takes about 30 seconds) to just head into your settings and update the email address there; then, depending on how this forum is configured, you might just need to check your new inbox to confirm the change.

My friendly little tip for you: try to set up a dedicated address through a service like Gmail, Outlook, or Yahoo that isn't tied to your specific internet provider, and use that for all your forum registrations and online accounts moving forward. 😁

I can't say for sure regarding the Home version since I’ve never actually gone that route myself; I have always stuck with Professional, though once I moved up to Windows 7, I almost exclusively installed Ultimate. Honestly, it doesn't make a massive difference because even the Professional edition performs quite reliably.

In any case, if you want to see the breakdown of the differences between versions:

http://www.intowindows.com/differenc...mate-editions/

Based on what you're trying to accomplish, there really isn't any meaningful distinction between the Home and Professional editions.

As for the processor situation, it might be best to let someone else weigh in on which one would suit you better, as I haven't kept up with the latest CPU specs and hardware trends lately. 🙂

On a side note, ever since I switched over to 64-bit Windows, I rarely run into any issues at all with my software, whether it's a specific application or a heavy game.
Anyone still running Windows 7? in Software ·
In this day and age, there is absolutely no reason to be intimidated by 64-bit processors; in fact, I’d strongly suggest you go that route. The most immediate benefit is that it will actually recognize all 4 GB of your RAM, unlike those old 32-bit systems that always felt a bit choked. Just keep in mind that when you're looking at installers, x86 refers to the 32-bit version, while x64 is the 64-bit one. Honestly, with almost any modern OS image you download online these days, you usually get the choice right during the installation process anyway. I think my old computer was probably the only one dim-witted enough to accidentally install x86 when it should have been x64, but oh well 🙂

While you might occasionally need to hunt down specific 64-bit versions of certain software, most programs available today are fully updated for it, and I truly believe 64-bit is the gold standard you should always aim for.

At least, that's just my two cents. 🙂

And you can also take this one. Just to give you some variety, feel free to grab any of them; I'm confident you won't go wrong if you just need something for light reading 😁

Douglas Garcia52 said:While I truly believe this system is an exceptionally solid choice for most users, I have to admit it isn't quite the absolute pinnacle of performance out there, especially when you start comparing it to the sheer power of Linux distributions or Solaris environments. 😉

I was perfectly fine with what we discussed earlier, but I have to say, I find myself disagreeing with this particular point.
Just as Thomas Hernandez21 previously illustrated with those graphics, there is a clear visual representation of what I mean.

I have a nagging feeling that I won't be able to get my workflow with Photoshop or Corel running nearly as smoothly on Linux as it does on Windows, though I suppose that is mostly speculation since I haven't actually sat down to test it all out yet.

It really just comes down to having the right tool for the job, doesn't it? I’ve always felt that everyone should pick their setup based on what they actually do with their machine, because there is no such thing as a perfect one-size-fits-all solution. For instance, if someone is building a high-end rig specifically for heavy gaming, they probably aren't going to bother installing Linux and then dealing with the headache of trying to emulate Windows just to get their favorite titles running smoothly. It seems like a lot of extra work when you could just stay on the native OS and get straight to the fun part.

Whenever I find myself tinkering with wireless setups, like Bluetooth or similar connections, I tend to stick exclusively to Linux versions. 😁).

David Parker44 said:There isn't any actual difference in quality when you compare a copy to the original. A copy is really just the activation code that's been cracked, while everything else remains identical. I've actually been running a cracked version myself, and honestly, it has worked flawlessly from day one without giving me a single headache.

Unfortunately, I have to disagree because it all really comes down to which specific version you decide to download. I see so many people downloading these heavily edited versions that come pre-loaded with random bloatware and extra programs, and then they act surprised when their system starts acting up. I feel like if someone is going to download Windows from the internet, they should probably use a little common sense and actually read the user comments first. Of course, if you're downloading a standard version—whether it's Windows 7 Professional, Ultimate, or whatever else you need—that hasn't been messed with by adding thousands of unnecessary files, and it’s just a simple activation crack, then everything should run perfectly fine, including all your updates.🙂

Douglas Garcia52 said:I am quite certain 🙂

just take care of yourself 😉

With all due respect, though sometimes you just hit a wall... it feels a bit pointless 🙂

If we are talking about an original Windows installation bought from a local print shop after thousands of different USB drives have been plugged in, do you honestly believe it will perform as smoothly as it did on day one?

What I mean is, I’m talking about heavy-duty usage for graphic design work, combined with a literal mountain of USB sticks passing through the ports, along with a billion files being constantly opened, moved, and scanned.

I have personally seen people who treat their hardware with incredible care—real enthusiasts—experience issues with their original Windows setups, so please forgive me, but I think you are missing the mark here.

Let me try to simplify this for you.

1. It is entirely possible to use Windows for ten years straight without ever needing a single reinstallation. There are certainly people out there who do exactly that, and I happen to be one of them. 😍
2. On the flip side, it is also entirely possible for Windows to just glitch out, leaving you with no choice but to reinstall. This happened to me once with the original Windows on my laptop; right in the middle of a normal workday, without me having touched a single setting or installed any new software for days, everything just went haywire—my USB ports would stop working and then start again, and the whole OS just started lagging.

And I highly doubt I’m some novice when it comes to computers. For instance, my Windows 7 has been running flawlessly since the very first moment I installed it (specifically Windows 7 Ultimate x64). However, I also had Windows XP x32 running perfectly for a long stretch before it eventually decided to act up. 😁

No offense intended, but you seem very insistent on telling everyone that if their Windows is acting up, it must be their own fault.

Here is a recent example from my father’s computer; he has been a massive tech enthusiast since the early days of personal computing. 😛

He installed MSN Messenger, and suddenly his keyboard started acting possessed. He would be typing, and letters would just appear randomly; he couldn't even play games using the WASD keys because the input would stutter every half second, making it feel like he was tapping a key rapidly instead of holding it down. We tried everything: Uninstall WLM, performing a system restore, reinstalling the keyboard drivers, swapping out the physical keyboard, and even installing specialized software from Logitech (and no, it wasn't a keyboard from $17), until I honestly can't even remember the full list of things we attempted... we eventually managed to fix it, but it was a nightmare. I just know that the computer had been running beautifully for ages before that happened.

Look, I love Windows, but insisting that there is no reason for it to glitch if you aren't doing anything "wrong" is just silly.
It’s Windows, for goodness sake; it is practically destined to have its little hiccups every now and then. 😍

it’s clearly just a subpar knockoff, haha

I wouldn't be quite so certain all the time😉

Just a quick heads-up—jadesurfer5, if everything seems to be running smoothly now, I wouldn't bother going through the hassle of reinstalling Windows just for the sake of it.😉

From what I can see on my end, I am getting a full 4 GB, and there is really no way for the system to report those numbers if they aren't actually working. Honestly, I don't feel the need to apologize to anyone because I know what I'm seeing right in front of me, and it’s hard to argue with visual proof. By the way, you've shared two different images of Windows here. Also, I have a quick question regarding an upgrade I did yesterday; I installed an Nvidia gtx 260 and added a 1 TB hard drive, yet my score is still stuck at 5.9. I wonder if that might be because I am still running my main OS from my old 320GB drive where I originally got that 5.9 rating? Interestingly, my graphics card actually pulled a higher score.

As someone else has already pointed out, it might be a good idea to check exactly how much memory is actually available to you before you try to defend your position to the people in this thread. ☕
